Just some facts about altitude versus horizon. An aircraft flying at 5000 feet can see about 86.5 miles. A ship with a mast occupied, at 120 feet can only see 13.5 feet. The age of aircraft provides much farther search areas and hence ships used as raiders no longer have secrecy and stealth. They can be spotted very easily by land based patrol bombers and floatplanes. I only use submarines although once in a while I will use an older armored cruiser stripped down to gain speed. Just my take on this, again. You mean "13.5" miles view distance for eyeballs at 120 feet above sea level, right? Yes, sorry for not doing a review before posting. Thanks. www.ringbell.co.uk/info/hdist.htm

AMCs intrigue me as an option for creating minelayers in the early game, when minesweepers are iffy.
I notably used AMCs in a 1920-start Germany game under the Versailles Treaty. They're way faster to build than submarines, so they're good for getting you back into the raider game quickly during your first war.

AMCs intrigue me as an option for creating minelayers in the early game, when minesweepers are iffy. Be aware that you need Active Mine Warfare (c.1902) to build minelaying AMCs, so they might be unavailable in a very early war.
Also, I don't know if the game actually models improvements in minesweeper effectiveness over the first half of the 20th century, as if I recall correctly the minesweeping score as shown in the Area Overview for a minesweeper of a given size is constant over the course of the game and none of the technologies specifically mention improvements to minesweeping - though it could also be folded into general ASW improvements, of course.

One use which I would like to try for AMCs, though I haven't yet had the opportunity, is the duty which they historically performed for the British: blockade duty. In my first ever world war in RTW2, playing as the US allied to Britain against Germany, France and Russia, the Allies enjoyed great superiority in battleships, but destroyers and cruisers were in short supply. The result was I had to keep almost all of my battleships in the European theatre in order to fulfil blockade duties. I never thought of using AMCs as a quick fix until I read in Churchill's memoirs that the British used such vessels for blockade duty in both wars in order to free up first line warships for more demanding tasks. Churchill is a great source for little details like that which often don't get explained in other sources.
