I've slapped together a massive list of German ship names using lists of rivers, mountains, towns, districts, girl names, boy names, etc. Right now it is in about 75% polished form. I've got an xlsx with all the interim lists and aggregated lists and the penultimate tab has everything in .data format, but (a) there are still typos (one of the sources was names of Stars and some of those are all caps, or just wrong strings like "double double"); (b) still redundancy; also (c) right now, there is a good bit of 'semantic disorganization' to it, meaning, some star names are used for BBs and some are used for DDs and that sort of thing. The number of names should probably be cut down to about 4 or 5 thousand and each ship type getting 500 to 1000 each with some coherent themes in the origins and meaning of the names for each ship type, but right now most of them have like ~250, but a couple have like ~3500 . . . so in addition to outright errors I need to resort and distribute it.
So basically, it is still a WIP and I work on it for 30 minutes or an hour at a time and then my eyes glaze over and I move on. I can probably have a final version where there are no repeats in a matter of 4 or maybe 8 hours of work, but for my purposes it is functional so my motivation to polish into masterpiece form is pretty low.
Anyone wants it either in current or final form and let me know. I'll plop it on pastebin or something.
The USN wanted to make me a cryptographer when I interviewed with them centuries ago, so I guess this is my deep-rooted string fetish coming out . . .
