Hi everyone,
I am glad to see the team finally included Qing China in the latest update, but I did note that the naming convention used in game does not seem to quite match that of the historical Beiyang Navy. Notably, the Beiyang navy (and other regional navy of the Qing dynasty such as the Guang Zhou Navy) never used any province or city names for their warships. While the in game list does include some historical ship names, it is mostly made up of Province/City names for BB/CA.
Thus I decided to edit the current ship name list with the one I made for the RTW1 Qing China mod in order to make the naming slightly more accurate and immersive. I realize that Chinese Ping-Yin is probably difficult to pronounce for many here, so I made sure all the new names are in Wade Giles, which I assume would be easier to pronounce? (Unfortunately I am not familiar with Wade Giles so I used an online translator to do it for me, so let me know if there are any mistakes).
The goal of this list is to make the naming convention used in game more aligned with the historical Beiyang practice of naming ship with adjectives or concepts rather than person or location. Historically, ship ordered around the same time or of the same class will tend to share characters, such as the two Ironclad Battleship Ding Yuan(定远) and Zhen Yuan(镇远) (Ting Yuan/Chien Yuan),who share the Yuan(远)character with an assortment of armored cruiser ordered around the same time.
Further, the name chosen for the ship are usually influenced by the role of said ship, and may serve to distinguish different class of ship sharing the same character (but not always). I.E. the Armored cruiser 致远(Zhi Yuan/Chih Yuan) can be roughly translated as "Reaching Far"(if taken less literally can have some meaning along the line of being "implacable"), where as the battleship 定远(Ding Yuan/Ting Yuan) would instead mean something like "Pacifying Great Expanses". However, without any set naming rules, names of ships can still vary greatly. So I've tried to both have names that share "same-character rule" across and within classes(---Yuan, ---Hai, etc) as well as some other names that fit the theme of the class.
General rule for naming:
BB/BC - Historical Ironclad battleships, generally grandiose names (some of which is named after the various city gates of Beijing).
CV/CVL - Various mythical flying animals/words having to do with them, with some similarity to IGN carrier naming.
CA - Various Historical CA, ramming cruisers, and heavier cruisers of the Beiyang navy, most of the "Yuan" type names, some other names that are traditionally used to describe far-reaching or might.
CL - Historical CLs, Most of the "Hai" type names, some names from the original list, and assorted words that are generally less aggressive sounding than the CAs.
DD - Mostly kept the original list with some additions. The "Lei" names in the original is basically 雷(Lei,Torpedo) + Chinese Bagua Character for numbering, "Fu" is a name shared by several common torpedo boats. ”Kuang" actually denote torpedo boats purchased by Guang Dong Navy, but since the player plays Qing China as a whole, I don't see much issue with leaving them there.
AMC - Original numbered name removed, replaced with all the historical training/transport ships being used by the Beiyang name. These ship names are kinda all over the place, from "sea-horse" to "smooth travel", but being transports I guess that is not a big deal.
XX - I moved some name meant for light coastal gunboats and minesweepers here, notably the "Tao" class minesweepers and "Chen" class gunboats (was originally given to CAs). Kept most of the original extra names here as well.
If the list is too short I can also try to expand it but I think it should be sufficient for most games.
