Hallo guys.
Please know- I love this game. And it is one of the best and realistic strategy games I know, but...
...I noticed a few issues, that start to ruin my fun with the game (explanation later)
1.) Design failures with BE/DE are back
I love to play games starting in 1920. But if your entire CL fleet consists of ships with BE 0", DE 1", you can´t refit them, not even for mine laying purposes and some 4" DP guns. And that sucks as hell! Especially with Germany you need these few crap cruisers to have something in active status, while your "big ships" are refitted or your first proper CLs are built. And because you can´t save those bad designs, you can do nothing.
2.) Engine refits
There is something I have noticed since I installed 1.18- the thing is, not in every game. In case I want to propulsion-refit some older ships (e.g. some older Bs from coal to oil firing with Germany), the new propulsion is way heavier than the current one, even oil firing is heavier than the older one. How? I had some CA as Germany (WNT running) with 2x2 10" and 4x2 8" with 25 coal firing knots speed. If I can upgrade them to oil firing (especially than, when you don´t have box protection and not superfiring turrets for CA in your tech and have to built CA within 11k ts) and can give them perhaps 26-27 knots, I have some cruiser untill the early 30s and than can put them into trade protection. In such a case I could ragequit the game and start a new one, because this pisses me off- everybody who plays 1920 WNT/Versailles-Germany knows how rarely you get some proper CAs in your starting fleet. In the end I give them armour and AA as hell and don´t refit their propulsion.
Or a better example- you try to refit some old BCs with 25 knots (these crappy A/Y+wingturrets designs with 5-6" belts with 15-18k ts) to your first CV (maybe CVL if below 16k ts), bulge it (for some torpedo defence), try to refit the propulsion for some extra planes and than Mr FU shows you his ugly finger right into your face. Sometimes I really get angry!
If this bug is in the game, all propulsion refits have the same issue, no matter which ship class.
3.) design speed/real speed
The next point that starts to annoy me- in case I started a complete new game. I check my fleet register and watch the speeds. In the most cases I have vessels (mostly DDs and CL, sometimes even CA, BB and BC not as often) with up to 3 knots difference from current to designspeed to my disadvantage. If I check the design and try to refit them, they start with several tons overweight, so the only thing I can do is a propulsion refit (now I want to mention point 2- very wellcomed in this case) and some down-armour-things with the turrets and strip off torpedo tubes or change their numbers.
I had a game, again with Germany (1920, no Versailles, random treaty), I had to scrap 34 DDs and a class of 6 CL because of this reason. 2 months later I quitted and started a new one- than with the issue of point 2.
Why is there such a big difference? And why do I often get ships with a combination of overweight (sometimes 20ts in a 1200ts DD design) and "trouble reaching the design speed" events? You can´t say this is just bad luck.
And the best thing is, in combination all 3 issues ruin any game. That really kills fun!
