As an aside to the debate over multiple torpedos carried i fail to see the sensibility of it. If you could carry more than 1 torpedo rather than carrying more just make a larger torpedo. It will be cheaper overall and more likely to seriously damage the target. Standardization. Why have 2 torpedoes that only some planes can carry when you could have 1 torpedo that fits on all planes, and can be doubled up on the heaviest bombers? Anything to streamline logistics.
The issue here is that torpedo defense systems are build against a certain amount of explosives in the warhead. Running two 500kg torpedos into a TDS rated for 500kg doesnt do much while a single 1000kg torpedo could cause significant damage.
A good showcase is how many torpedos it took to actually sink the yamato classes and in the context of the game they dont even represent the biggest ships we see. Additionally you can assume they will actually be properly defended from air attacks so getting multiple hits on such a target becomes quite unlikely so you want to make sure it does considerable damage.

Fighters don't dive bomb. Do they? I'm not sure. That's why I keep DB's around. They are able to put a bomb through any type of Turret Top or Deck armor. Although most battleships are phased out by this point, BC's are still a threat. holoween, how many escorts do you usually send with a bomber squadron... if say, you have four average type carriers and you've just spotted an enemy CV group? Fighters can use the 'Glide bombing' attack technique in the game, but they cannot do a 'Dive bombing' attack. Glide bombing is a more shallow attack profile (around 45-60 degrees glide slope) than Dive bombing (which was typically 70-90 degrees).

It will be cheaper overall and more likely to seriously damage the target. enlarging the torpedo actually has a few problems the plane needs to have a high enough landing gear for the torpedo to not touch the deck when taking off this was a problem on the fw190 and the b7a2 and as a result they increased the height of the tail landing gear on the 190 as seen here i.pinimg.com/originals/82/fc/c7/82fcc7c13a33192eafb248c159519948.jpg having 2 or more torpedoes only increases the horizontal space taken up by the torpedoes and not the vertical space where as larger torpedoes also increase the vertical space taken up also less customization in torpedo payloads as you can no longer take 1 torpedo to increase range but need to take the one very large one limiting range also cant mount them in bomb bays due to size and would not be compatible with your older aircraft in the fleet though decreasing the length of the torpedo does make it less likely for the torpedoes tail to hit the ground for combat its also better to spread out the torpedo damage rather than have one large hit as it will spread out damage control and flood more compartments and generally speaking torpedo defense systems were not strong enough to defend against "weaker" torpedoes for example torpedoes such as the mk-13 still had a 270kg warhead which was enough to breach the Japanese torpedo defenses and even the yamato still had her TPS penetrated and shinano while not having her damage control installed had her TDS which was breached by torpedoes with similar warhead weight of 303kg this can be seen by the fact it only took around 10 torpedoes to effectively sink yamato the rest (15 i believe) hit her hull bottom because she was listing so badly the Japanese used a similar warhead for their early airborne torpedoes which also performed well) by the end of ww2 the Japanese using a slightly longer version of their torpedo had basically doubled the warhead to some 500kg (mark 7 strong) yet kept the same size except lenght which had increased slightly also as cogsandspigots said standardization so you dont have to produce alot of different torpedo models (although by ww2 most nations had separate airborne and seaborne torpedoes so im not actually sure how important this was or if standardization became a thing post 1945)
