Really only a thing for the predread era, but there were several designs that used sponson-mounted main guns.
For one example, Germany's Siegfried-class coast defense battleships had two sponson-mounted single turrets forward with a single centerline mount aft. USS Maine and half-sister USS Texas carried their main armament in two staggered sponson-mounted turrets.
The idea would be that a sponson-mount gun turret would have a much wider arc of fire on its own side of the ship, but would have no cross-deck fire capability. Not sure how much coding work it would take to add these gun mount options, so it might not be worth it for something that will be obsolete by 1920. Just a thought that was rattling around.
