You will love this one - www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyjNInIH4HwThe F-14's were from the VF-84 Jolly Rogers but they were Grumman Test Pilots flying the planes. It was filmed off of Norfolk NAS in the Atlantic. The Zero's were modified AT-6 Texans. I went to Norfolk to work on the Nimitz just after she arrived back from the filming. It was interesting talking to the shipboard crews about the filming. BTW, if the 20mm Gatling had hit a real Zero, it would have exploded into little pieces.😁 Suffice to say that it wasn't Top Gun that made me a fan of the F-14

The real problem as I see it, was that the Nimitz was not stationed in San Diego until seven years later after the movie was made and the ship seen through the portals of the Arizona Memorial was not the Nimitz, it was the Connie. I worked on both ships. I worked on the Nimitz at Norfolk and San Diego along with the Connie in San Diego. My office on the third floor could see right down the flight deck of the Quay Wall carriers.

We had to seal the avionics assemblies called WRA's with Dupont 3145 sealant because she leaked. She had problems with her Air Data Computer repair until I figured out a way of adjusting them while testing them, then I had to go to Miramar to train the sailors to perform the test.

I was a teen back then and the F-14 looked (and still does) cool as all heck - enough for me at the time

The radar for the F-14A was the AWG-9A out of the navalized F-111 project which was shut down. The engines were the engines recanned out of the same aircraft. The F-14A was supposed to have the F-100's from the F-15 but they were not ready in the project plan timing. The TF30's caused many accidents some of which occurred near our home which is near Miramar NAS at the time. Eventually it the F101 engines which greatly improved its climb ability and reliability.

I mean, I'd kill for the game to emulate Harpoon 1/Classic and play an 8-bit version of Anchors Aweigh when you sink an enemy ship. (Adjusted for nationality, insert proper music of your favorite nation here; I know Harpoon had the USSR's anthem and something for the Brits but I can't remember if it was Rule Britannia or God Save The Queen.) But I've never actually been able to find that recorded, either.
