I have had a few of these after war reports on what percentage of enemy planes are shot down by various methods. My fighters always shoot down the most by far, other planes get a couple %, heavy AA in the mid teens, light aa in the mid teens...and medium AA is 0% every time. In none of my reports has medium AA ever shot anything down.
I've re-read the manual and it claims medium AA has a chance to shoot down enemy planes before they drop their load, but they never have for me.
I will admit since seeing 4 such reports I scaled back the medium AA from around 1/3 - 1/2 of my AA light/medium AA armament on larger ships, to only about 1/5 and I swear I'm actually shooting down more planes now.

My experience has been about 90% fighters, 9% heavy AA, 1% medium, and <1% light AA. I actually stop putting light AA on ships once medium is available since it rarely shoots anything down, and even struggles to disrupt drops after aircraft reach a certain speed.

I will have to monitor that in my games. Light AA should work on birds that get real close, but medium is the one to keep them completely away from you. Interesting. Thanks gents.

I thought the task of light AA is more to reduce the accuracy of attacking craft than actual damage, would be nice if soneone more knowledgeable could confirm that ^^ But yeah medium AA performance is pretty uninspiring. I find they damage more planes than they shoot down, which is still a win tactically of course.

There are several discussions somewhere in the forum.
There is a random chance - modified the speed of the attacking aircraft - that light AA will not cause damage until after the aircraft's attacks are made. This means that Light AA's disruptive effects are the more reliable method of preventing damage to the ship.
Medium AA starts with low accuracy, but this improves as research is completed. This in turn means the most useful ratio of Light:Medium is changing.

I do believe that it changes over time with tech. Very early on light AA is more than capable of shooting down aircraft outright. midgame it fails to shoot down aircraft but does a good job disrupting drops. By the 40s I don't see any point in using it though, as planes are so fast they drop their bombs before light AA even opens up on them. Heavy AA improves the most with tech advances and also benefits the most from AA directors if I am not mistaken. Late game I stick as much heavy AA on my ships as possible and use medium AA to use up any excess displacement on top of that.
