What's the difference in protection between the two?
Does "narrow belt" only apply to B section of it?

What's the difference in protection between the two? Does "narrow belt" only apply to B section of it? Based on tonnage costs, "narrow" applies to both B and BE - BE weight is reduced by about 25% and B weight is reduced by about 21% when using the narrow belt scheme.
Given the tonnage costs per inch of thickness of B and BE armor, this suggests that the narrow scheme with both B and BE armor covers about 77% of the area covered by B and BE under the normal scheme, which implies that the area covered by BE armor under the normal scheme (~36% of the armor belt by tonnage cost per inch of thickness) is largely though not completely unprotected under the narrow scheme.

Yes, the weight difference is quite substantial, for both, the B (27.29% of additional weight with normal belt) and the BE (33.34% of additional weight with normal belt) sections . 29.5% of additional weight total with normal belt, at least for the design I've checked it with. However, is there a linear increase in protected area with this weight difference, as it of course should be in real life, or is narrow uniform belt an exploit that gives similar protection at a lower weight of armor?

Most important to me imho is that I've never seen machinery destroyed through the hull ends / unprotected areas when I'm using a narrow uniform belt. I've definitely seen a predreadnought lose power through a BE hit while running a 12/4 full belt. Narrow uniform seems to flood more and take more superstructure damage, but I don't have hard numbers on that.
Since casemates are supposed to bolster BE superstructure armor, I tend to put a ****ton of them on my predreadnoughts with 2" plating. This should(?) provide superstructure protection against splinters that's lacking because I use narrow uniform belts. It also supports the early game "hail of fire" style.
