Should I give the lead division of my battleline a "core" or "independent" order ?
I don't really understand the difference.

Core is for divisions that you want to follow the leader in the line of battle; Independent releases a division - and any divisions following it - from the line to maneuver independently of the leader.
Also, the role of a division under manual control is largely irrelevant, as the role you set controls how the computer will use it.

The head division should be independent, every following division should be core with its lead division set to the division directly in front of it.

What does an AI controlled independent division do, anyways? I've toyed with it as a way to make CLs clean up straggling transports in convoy missions, with mixed results.

Also, what happens if the lead division is given core orders and is AI-controlled ?

Depends on what kind of ship/division it is, and pure luck as well. Independent scouting forces made up of BCs or CAs seem to do a pretty good job set on independent first scouting for the enemy, then chasing the enemy scouting force around while you concentrate on the battleline. Independent carrier forces seem to try and stay within a certain distance of your main force which can be OK, but is usually not ideal. Other ships like Cls and DDs seem to be a little less intelligent. Sometimes they will move towards spotting reports to try and engage the enemy, sometimes they will sail in a random direction aimlessly.

Core doesn't seem to work for destroyers. Lead division holds a straight course and second "core" division wanders all over the place.

Destroyer division as core has different behaviour than all other divisions being core. Destroyer division has more possibility to act independently which represents how destroyer divisions were handled.
