I'm currently reading a good book on the Battle of the Java Sea. It's like reading about a battle in Rule the Waves:
Ship damage causing it to slow and reducing the speed of the entire squadron Signals misunderstood causing the formation to be jumbled and effecting the course of the battle Dud shell hits Shell dyes Large number of torpedoes being fired with few hits A squadron of cruisers wandering through the darkness looking for a convoy Only being able to request land fighter coverage for a single ship squadron A comically small hit percentage Ammo shortages Destroyers doing their own thing Ships having to stop to recover float planes
A couple things I did notice that is not in the game is that the Japanese float-plane scouts shadowed the Allied fleet providing consistent updates. This is not really possible with the way scouts go out and back. Also, both sides used forms of star shells and search lights that allowed the battle to continue into the night. This has always been missing in RTW and night battles must take place at incredibly close range until radar is invented.
Overall though its fun to read about a naval battle and be like "wow I experienced the same thing in a video game"
