So I was thinking that after Shell Dyes are unlocked, for your capitol ship classes at least, you can set the dye color for individual ships, then in battle the shell splashes from the main battery of those particular ships appear as the color you have selected. This way when your engaging the enemy with multiple capitol ships you can figure out at a glance who is shooting at what without waiting for the turn to end in order to see the firing lines.

There was a sailor who made a comment during a pacific naval battle with the Japanese in WWII. "They're shooting at us in Technicolor,"

No, the dyes they used on the shells made the splashes take on that color. That's how they work, to be able to identify which ship fired which shell so they could adjust aim.

IIRC at longer ranges, in poor weather, or especially at night, the color differences would be mostly indeterminate to the firing ships, so in practice they were not as effective as hoped for.
