The closest thing to RTW as a tank game is going into Early Access tomorrow: store.steampowered.com/app/1674170/Sprocket/However, it seems to be missing a campaign layer and rahter features "mission challenges". One can hope for evolution in EA though...

Yes, I have Shadow Empire. It's good, but it's a bit more high-level than I'd like. For instance, in RTW, you can actually see ships sailing around shooting at each other. Shadow Empire doesn't have that. I haven't played it, but I have played Gratuitous Space Battles (1 and 2), and I've watched Youtube videos of GTB. From what I saw, it's basically a tower defence but from the other side (so, tower attack, I guess?). Not really what I'm looking for. One can hope for evolution in EA though... Just a minute. Aaaand...wishlisted. Right, where was I? Yeah, this looks like pretty much exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. The lack of a campaign mode is disappointing, but, as you say, it's in EA, so that might change one day. But, as it is, it looks like it's basically Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts, but with tanks, and way more detailed customisation. Or like World of Tanks/War Thunder (EDIT: "No hit-points. Vehicles carry on the fight as long as their critical internals are still functioning." So, I guess more War Thunder), except single player (thank God) and with tank customisation. And, to top it all off, it's releasing in 8 hours, so that's something to look forward to tomorrow. I have no idea how I didn't find this in my search, so thank you.

Try Steel Panthers:WW2 and/or SP:MBT by the Camo Workshop perhaps? They are the continuation of the SP series, now ported over from DOS to windows as winSPWW2 and winSPMBT and still being maintained/extended with an annual uptate patch. The Free Demo is entirely playable, just limited to an 800x600 window. The paid-for version uses the full monitors screen size as well as adding extended features. WW2 has the traditional full-war WW2 Long Campaign for several participating nations Both have the Campaign Mode where you choose up to 3 opponents and the number of battles Both have User-designed Campaigns as well and an editor to create your own ones. Both have vastly expanded maps ove the original SP - 15 terrain levels instead of just 3, many more terrain tile types, much larger choice of map sizes. Available at Shrapnel Games: www.shrapnelgames.com/Camo_Workshop/WW2/WW2_page.htmlwww.shrapnelgames.com/Camo_Workshop/MBT/MBT_page.html

There is a degree of that to it - not overly surprising as the premise is WW1 that didn't end in 1918. I can understand your being reluctant to try it though - maybe grab it at 75% off in the future? Couple of quid if you don't enjoy it or an amazing bargain if you do ;P

That sprocket game is on my wish list as well now.
Looks like a lot of fun. I have never seen a game like it that lets you design and play tanks.

As I recall, I didn't think much of it. Also, I believe the "tank design" element I'm looking for is limited to a separate unit editor, not part of the game?

The Mobhack editor allows you to edit unit and weapon data and play "what if" should you desire to do so. Your edited units are then available in the game.

It's not brilliant though - if memory serves, you're limited to 4 weapons - and any that aren't in position 1 have additional limitations. If I wanted to design an AFV with stupid levels of armour, 4 turreted 105mm guns and insane speed there's nothing to stop me - heck in SPWAW I managed to build a tank with 200mm armour all round, a 3.7" AA gun as primary armament, secondary 20 pounder, tertiary 155mm howitzer and quaternary 20mm flakvierling (yep, very mixed armament) with a speed of 40 hexes (which might have made it all but invincible but unfortunately this didn't really affect morale and the crew abandoned the tank)

I think you misunderstood me. I want the unit design to be a part of the game, like in RTW. I don't want it to be a case of having a separate unit editor that lets you do whatever you like without limitations.

A bit far out (but probably less far than the tiger shark one), do you know of Gratuitous Tank Battles? It is the successor of Gratuitous Space Battles, which I found to be pretty fun. Gameplay is kind of Tower Defense, but both in attacking and defending mode, and it is possible to decide which wepaons, engine and armor go on tanks (and mechs, it is a weird WW1-SciFi combo). Reviews are middling at 55%, but maybe you get a few hours of fun out of it, full price is $10, but it regularly goes on sale for $2.50.
Edit: oops, i just saw that I missed the second page of the thread where someone already recommended this, please ignore
