Just had a thrilling 2 hour battle in my Germany game where i am focusing on having heavily armed BB's and carriers with armour so they can operate in the Baltic. 1928 and the soviets are pushed over the edge and suddenly war is upon us, after a soviet coup in Norway this becomes our first target, and the soviet fleet is out in force to defend it. The battle started out poorly, as whilst a BB->CV conversion carrier was fuelling some bombers to use for scouting 4 Russian land based MB's came over the horizon, none survived however one managed a near miss, which bounced off the deck armour and into one of the gun pits, which were unarmoured. First started and raged out of control. (lesson learned) After a full day of slowly escorting the Transports north a DD that had lost contact with the fleet on the break of dawn found the ENTIRE Russian battle line. Unfortunately this gave me the perfect opportunity to trap their disorganised battle line between my fleet with its 14,15 and 16 inch guns and the Norwegian coast. All the while vectoring in all strike aircraft to the area. After a 30 minute pummelling, the brand new German DD's moved in for the kill. The results were decidedly one sided:

I love it when a plan comes together...
A pity you lost that carrier, but as you said - a lesson learned.
At Midway it was a Japanese destroyer returning to the fleet that led the American strike planes in. Here, at least, the luck fell on your side.
A magnificent victory... well done!

The results were decidedly one sided: So if I understand correctly, bomb near miss set fire to one of the secondary guns, which raged out of control and destroyed the ship? If so, I'm not sure that armouring the guns is necessarily going to help in the future - a fire could just as easily have been set in the superstructure or on the deck (if the FD had been unarmoured) couldn't it?

I am afraid im uncertain, however i thought 2 inches of armour on the guns protects them from splinters, and i thought that it would apply to this too.

Ah. Thank you for the clarification. I usually go for 3" on secondaries of 6" and below (2" on cruisers), so I would have thought 2" adequate. If you examine armor schemes for secondary turrets you'll find the US 5"/38 twin turret on the Atlanta class cruisers listed at 1.25" (32mm). That's about half of what I thought it was. I looked up stats on the Dido class but no armor is listed.
Sounds like you may have just run into one of those rolls of the cosmic dice. The consolation is that you can put a good bit of your battle line in reserve now and build a replacement or three... the Soviets may send out some battlecruisers but they have nothing to challenge you.

Alas this war spiralled out of control a few months later, the UK joined the russians, and in order to stop them i went for unresticted sub warfare, and it was doing great! Until it sunk 3 passenger liners in 4 months and japan and France also joined in!
