Had Rule the Waves for quite some time now, started a new game as Japan after a longish break and ran into my cruisers getting splintering issues even though they were armoured with 2 inches of protection on turrets, deck and de. Some photos to show the splintering and the ship design. I was under the assumption from reading a few posts on the forum that this sort of armour would prevent splintering damaging gun crews and effecting the engine. I did forget to armour the conning tower but had alreayd built 5+ cruisers to this design before I noticed oops Was wondering if splintering was preventable and if so how?, feel free to comment on the cruiser design in general too it was a 1899 build, designed it with the idea of gaining some of my vps in wars as Japan by winning light cruiser engagements so made it quite heavy and had a smaller battle line at the start of the game. (normally make them around 4000t)

From 2.5" of armour turret is considered closed but could be knocked out even if shell does not penetrate armour.

More accurately, 6" and lighter guns in single mounts with 2" or less armor protection are considered to be shielded and so remain vulnerable to splinters. However, 6" and lighter guns in twin/triple/quad mounts or 7" and heavier guns in any single/twin/triple/quad mounts are always considered to to be mounted in fully-enclosed turrets and so will be safe from splinters with 2" armor.

Okay thanks so if I have 2.5 turrets with 2 inch roof that would stop the gun crew getting cut down? I'm assuming there's nothing that can be done about the intakes?

Upping BE to 2" might do it; I don't know if it does so on protected cruisers, but if I recall correctly BE protects uptakes with the sloped deck and flat deck schemes. That said, I personally don't find it worth putting that level of armor onto CLs and skip BE and DE entirely in favor of more guns, higher speed, or lower displacement.

Yes, I doubt Id increase the armour or weight anymore, I was just trying to experiment with a new design they did quite well but they were at the expensive of only 1 B at the start of the game instead of two so I never had the oppurtunity to decisively defeat the Russians in a few early war fleet engagements. Im going to experiment with 4 inch cruisers next to drop the cost
