Its summer of 1912, a recently promoted French Admiral Louis-Émile was ordered to undertake a coastal raid of the German North East coast with the Republic hoping to turn the tide of the war having lost the colonial possession of Senegal some weeks earlier. But Admiral Louis-Émile, dissatisfied with his orders of destroying a singular coastal battery, was determined to show his fleet's superior élan over his foe. At dawn on August 3rd at 9:30pm his three battleships left harbour, with his orders: bombard the city of Bremen, then return and destroy the coastal battery 20 miles north of Wilhemshaven. When the German Kaiser Marine intercepted this radio transmission it was assumed there must have been a mistake during decoding, sailing three battleships 37 miles upstream appeared wholly non-sensical. The Highseas Fleet readied three battlecruisers and their destroyer screen just east of Neuwerk, when visual reports confirmed that the French fleet were entering the Weser estuary headed upstream. Admiral Klein, ordered his battlecruisers to follow keeping out of sight of the French. By now theFrench were far upstream, Admiral Klein ordered his battlecruisers to turn while the river was still wide enough for them to do so, and for his destoryers to engage. There was almost no gunfire the destoryers, far more nimble than their battleships, were able to fire their torpedos and disengage before the French had fired their first shot. At least the French had not attached wheels and driven away overland. I have seen a cruiser do that (LOL - but yeah).
