While I was one of the proponents of a Steam release back before RtW2, and I still believe it is overall a good idea - if RtW3 will follow RtW2's current DRM policy and the two releases will come out with rooughly the same price tag (meaning esentially that a Steam purchase means notably less profit for the team, if I can afford it, I'll see no reason not to purchase the game directly from the team (and perhaps later on also on Steam). I do recall myself also raising concens - while still greatly respecting the amount of work put in - about the DLC/expansion having topics that felt like the "standard" game should've featured (notably the currently very-very beta SSMs for example - I'd be likely veeeery unpopular within the community for this, but I think we should perhaps get rid RtW2 of missiles entirely rather than having the feature barely there so as to make it a more coherent experience), so perhaps oddly enough I am more than fine and happy with the "third game approach", I feel like it's a much more clear situation and it seems that a proper, well-deserved "status upgrade". *(btw apologies if I am not entirely ontopic anymore, RL is kicking me around a bit lately, thus didn't keep up particularly well with the community) So - good news, keep it up and take care!

Actually Fredrik and I have long mused about a sorta "WW2 in Space" type of game, but honestly we have no solid plans for such....well, yet anyway....lol. "Naval Warfare Simulations?" Well, a space navy is still a navy, right? Let's add to the series; we've already got Rule the Waves and Rule the Depths, why not add Rule the Stars too?

My one issue with RtW2 is that I find running carrier operations to be super-fiddly and simply not a lot of fun. So while an extended timeline and missiles sounds like a cool addition I'm worried that in practice it will just extend the un-fun part of the game another 20 years.
What I would most like to see is a better carrier mission UI and more automation of carrier tasks because while I am enough of a history nerd to recognise the importance of planning sorties the gamer in me doesn't actually enjoy the busywork of that part of the simulation.

Does anyone remember a book... can't remember the author (maybe David Drake?)... subject was colonists on a water-world settling affairs by combat with radio-controlled battleships. Wild, weird, wacky idea but it did make for some amazing naval battles LOL. May not be the book you're thinking of, but that sounds like the water maze from Iain M Banks' Surface Detail. Got to love the Culture series.
Anyway, very much looking forward to RTW3 - bit of a shame it's moved away from expansion status as I was hoping for a relatively swift release, but October isn't that long away really.

While nuclear subs would be cool... maybe we should ask the devs to please make it so costal gun fortifications don't move around every month so they are actually usable instead of adding a engine type to a warship type that isnt even simulated properly in the game >_>
I just really want my 10in gun batteries to be useful for once, just once lol.

Now hopefully one of the factions in this space game is led by Angus McFife and their ship design is a spacegoing submarine

I remember reading this too, but you beat me to it! Set on a "terraformed" Venus (quotes because the terraforming process was a little too enthusiastically darwinian), with underwater cities and heavily codified warfare between what were essentially maritime PMCs...

This is why asking people a question is so much better than googling, you never know what kind of fantastic conversations you'll get! ...and I just massively self edited, because we're Way off from the OP.

How about more control in regards to what is actually sent to battles. Often what you get doesn't make sense. Maybe have surprise battles as a different thing. Since subs are getting an upgrade, how about updating ASW as well? Otherwise, very exciting news. Especially the new start date. That has been adjusted, and is something we are looking at again since we have a bit extra time.

Will coastal defense evolve to include ASM after a certain time? Or potentially a option to build ASM batteries?
