I personally cant see a difference and then I found this vid where guy documents several battles and creates spreadsheet. I understand its a small sample but still, UM is protecting ship only from critical engine hits and it look like thats all

I think people on Discord also determined that unit machinery was useless. Not sure if this youtuber is the same person or not

It stops ships from being fully disabled in battle, which can often mean a loss of the ship. So for most ships I think its worth it

I like it for destroyers and cruisers when I can spend the weight. Larger ships I feel can normally get by without.

From I dunno, 100 hits there is like 1 engine crit hit and thats what was prevented by UM. Every ship with OR without UM was loosing same speed after engine hits.

As the game currently implements Unit Machinery, it is effectively useless. It only blocks the effects of a single critical hit that ordinarily has an extremely low probability of occurring. It has no effect whatsoever on propulsion-limiting casualties like engine room hits, seawater in the feed tanks, loss of electric power, etc. Whether it *should* limit the effects of propulsion-limiting casualties or not is a totally separate discussion.

Those engine critical hits can kill a ship so it's useful in that respect and even though they might be "rare" from a number of shots perspective, thousands of rounds are usually fired in every major battle. Engine critical hits tend to happen, in my games at least, sometimes every battle, sometimes multiple times in a battle, or sometimes every few battles. But they do happen so I like it. I don't know if it should limit loss of speed from normal engine hits, I don't know about it enough to say
