Just wanted to make this a bit more apparent, since it happened in the middle of a rather lengthy post in another thread, but AI Wars have been at least somewhat confirmed by Fredrick: nws-online.proboards.com/post/81067While strictly speaking the phrase "planning on" was used, this seems to be a rather big deal, as this has been one of the most consistent requests since RtW1.

It would be good if the player themselves could jump in and join the wars, even though they might not be directly allied with either party. If UK and US go to war for example. If your playing as Italy, it would be good to side with the US in the hopes of gaining more territory in the Med.

As the head of the Admiralty that decision would likely be over your pay grade, although a pop-up asking for your opinion on getting involved wouldn't be out of place. Especially if one of the parties is an ally.

However, I've been reading about Mers-el-Kebir, and the role played by Admiral François Darlan, the commander of the French Navy, in that particular debacle (or see Drachinifel's article at www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aoi33VAAO4). Check it out and then see what happened to him...

So, you already behave to a limited extent as the state aswell as the Naval leader.
The decisions as to whether or not to intervien in another nations expansion, or whether you should take part in sending a naval fleet to try and expand your empire being very much political decisions and not those taken by Naval commanders.

Just this month, with no prior alliance, Japan "joined" on my side. So, at least for the AI, that is already in. Japan might get the Liaotung peninsuly from this.

I've also had allies sign a seperate peace and leave the war, leaving me fighting.

Or even be affected by another war, say, England and France ended up at war, but, occassionally, some of your ships accidently get caught in the crossfire, be they be events you have to fight your way out of, or as a news event, that results in your ship either being destroyed or badly damaged and be out of active service for a time?

Yeah and maybe also something to help another nation kind of like the lend lease act.
