I would like an option to re-engine older aircraft with newer more powerful engines possibly with turbo-superchargers or geared superchargers. This would be akin to the change from Merlin to Griffon engines in the Spitfire, radial to inline engines for the FW-190 and the Japanese Zero which was re-engine from a Suisei to a Kinsei engine. I think it could reduce aircraft procurement costs and allow a player to retain good aircraft. Be advised, a re-engine could decrease fuel economy as did the Zero fighter but give it far more speed.
My suggestion would be to add a check box or something to the right click on the aircraft to make it obsolete. If you click on the check box, the plane now receives a new engine and its date is changed. It's parameters would change. This would be level speed, climb rate but range might decrease. It would also increase the ordnance load.

There are improved models that manufacturers produce in the game (the initial model may be a sub "A" model, with improved models being sub "B" and sub "C" versions, etc). The newer models are assumed to incorporate more powerful engines as they become available and new tech like superchargers, etc. All this is simply subsumed into the aircraft improvement process in the game and is not something that requires any sort of direct player intervention.

Excellent, that's perfect.

Now, not to add more complication. It would be interesting to add an aircraft like the FR-1 Ryan Fireball. Top speed of 426 mph. It was the Navy's first jet aircraft. It was powered by a jet engine and a piston engine. Only 66 were ever built. Maybe we could add a jet powered patrol flying boat like the P6M SeaMaster. It's top speed was 686 mph with a combat range of 750 nmi. Very cool bird. How about the F2Y Sea dart seaplane fighter. It was supersonic and could be refueled from submarines.
