The land of the rising sun enters the world stage
Tensions have been building between Tsarist russia and the empire of japan, specifically over north east Asian territory and minor ports, growing concerns about Russian ambition has been raised in japan and measures are being planned to prevent it. The admiralty unhappy with the saturation begins setting up plans for surprise attacks on Vladivostok and Port Arthur in case of war though many think it as cowardly and unfair.
In 1901 on a Tuesday morning a Russian cruiser opens fire on a Japanese trawler thinking it a torpedo boat which had entered Russian waters, this sparks outrage in japan. The crew were all killed and no official apology was sent from the Russians, Rather a threat from Moscow was sent threatening action against the empire of japan against further intrusions into their waters.
During the following morning a telegram is sent to Moscow from the imperial war committee declaring war, The navies plans for a surprise attack quickly kick into motion and before 5 in the morning 3 battleships of the old Hizen class, 5 cruisers, and 14 destroyers are outside of port Arthur.
Navy compositions at the start of the war were as follows.
The Russians though surprised but having been prepared don't fire back immediately as many of their crews are still sleeping, but torpedoes quickly slam against their heavy cruisers and battleship hulls and the entire port is awoken with gunfire from both sides,
During the combat Japanese torpedo boats swerve through columns of Russian armored cruisers and battleships but a chronic shortage of torpedoes aboard the torpedo boats is realized. The destroyers having quickly fired all of their torpedoes are faced with gunfire from Russian ships at near point blank range though the damage caused was great a lack of torpedoes meant many targets were undamaged.
The Japanese evaluating damage to their own destroyers decide to hold their cruisers and battleships back to avoid further losses, this decision was hotly debated and critiqued though in the end most agreed it was the safest choice.
The battle ending with a decisive victory for the Japanese.
After the Russian navy having suffered significant defeats in fleet battle skirmishes in which they all attempted to flee from or draw out a lucky day had finally come for the Japanese.
Friday Admiral Togo having recently repaired his lightly damaged battleships after a skirmish at Tsushima sinking a Russian Fleet of the remaining battleships which were undamaged or in port sets sail.
Admiral Togo Sets sail in chase of the Russian fleet which had been spotted leaving port looking for a fight, Though mindful as half the fleet is currently in port for repairs.
At 6 in the morning Togo spots the Russian fleet steaming along the coast having recently exited Port Arthur, In order to cut the Russians off Togo maneuvers his ships around the Saili islands obscuring the russians vision of his fleet, The Russian admiral quickly figuring out Togos intentions races towards port Arthur.
Though his slow pre dreadnoughts making a mere 15 knots limits his fleets speed significantly and Togo arrives to cut off the Russian fleets retreat, The Russian admiral hopes to sail along the coast and use the background of coast to impair the Japanese rangefinding and gunnery.
Togo realizes this and closes to very low range (approx 2000-3000 yards) effectively nullifying the advantage the Russians have. During a several hour long fight down towards Port Arthur the Japanese slowly win the gun duel with supperior rate of fire and guns.
Russian pre dreadnoughts quickly begin falling out of line and take torpedoes by the Japanese light cruisers and torpedo boats Quickly sinking as a result.
During the fight the Flagship of the Japanese fleet Sagami one of the new Asahi battleships is pummeled repeatedly for several hours taking the focused fire of most of the Russian fleet. At the end of the fight when Russian fire dies down and the last Russian ships slip beneath the waves Sagami is burning brightly with smoke coming out of most of her upper works.
Her superstructure mangled by high explosive but having suffered no armor penetrations from Russian projectiles her 10 inch armor having held up well.
However while firefighting was ongoing one of the retreating Russian torpedo boats racing towards her with heavy smoke from her exhausts, attempting to form a smoke screen for concealment she finds herself in torpedo range, One of her torpedoes launched hits the Sagami on the left hand side of the turret magazine and severe flooding sets in.
Approximately 6 hours after the torpedo hit damage control teams have done the best they could and the fires are mostly under control but slow flooding from small cracks and holes cant be stopped and orders are given to abandon ship, at 18:21 Sagami keels over to the left-hand side and Explodes violently Despite having only around 10% of her total ammunition leftover, Destroyers attempt to rescue anyone who did not get off in time.
She would be one of three Asahi class battleships lost during the war.
Post battle the Tsar is forced to accept a heavy peace as a result of rioting and protests over the war, and having lost any chance at striking back at the Japanese.
The world looks on while the Japanese celebrating their victory over the Russian navy. Many new designs and ideas and lessons from this war are being incorporated and developed.
Peace is signed with Russia having lost Liaotung peninsula and as a result Port Arthur in addition to them being forced to pay war reperations.
