There're already crew numbers, technically- when a ship sinks and survivors are rescued there's a (random?) amount of crew noted as picked up in the log Its partially random, but the number of survivors picked up also depends upon the cause of the ship sinking...if it was something really catastrophic (say a main magazine explosion) then the survivors number will be much lower...aka HMS Hood as an example.

I love the idea of having a "visible" crew on each ship, even if the only named person is the CO. It creates a stronger link between the ships and the player. If you simply think of these virtual vessels as mindless disposable automatons, then you will be more likely to use them as naval cannon fodder. But if you are able identify with them, or rather with the men who serve aboard them. You would be much more reticent about simply throwing them at the enemy. After all, you, as head of the Navy would have had many years of personal experience of serving on ships, as you work your way up the ranks. But why limit it to just a named CO? It would be great to get an after action message along the lines of: "As a result of a recent engagement with enemy forces, and past accomplishments, the commanding officer of the CL "Cruiser" is promoted to the rank of Captain. Also, for outstanding service to the same ship in pest control, the ships cat (Ivan the Terrible) is promoted to the rank of CPO." (That's Chief ***** Officer).

Actually, you do get points for rescuing enemy crewmembers and vice versa already, IIRC.

That's why seawolf is saying that it's better for your ships to go down with all hands than for the crew to be rescued by the enemy - the enemy gets more points for sinking your ship and rescuing your crew than they do for just sinking your ship.
