Hi folks,
Does anyone know if there's a way to let the player "colour outside the lines" in terms of the games ship types? I don't think the AI could cope without them and certainly needs them to manage ship behaviour in battle but I've noticed several occasions when historical designs (especially the more outre "neverwere" types) are declared "illegal" because they overstep the game's type definitions. It would be fun to try out some of history's more alternative design trends occasionally... Anyone for that "Torpedo Battleship", "Aviation Cruiser" or "Torpedo Gunboat"?

I'd like to create a ship type. I want to create a Frigate class. I'd make it available in the missile era and have to go from 3500 tons to eventually 7500 tons. It wouldnt be required to have armor but it could have it and could function mostly like a destroyer.

The problem here is the battle generator couldn't handle a new ship type, although a solution could be putting it under the battle generator for a selected category.

Hi Seawolf, That would be my thought. I'm experimenting with designing an "Aviation Cruiser" by cross-breeding a CVL and a CL in the edit and probably telling the game it is a CVL. Problem is that it is an illegal design so the AI would never own one (though I could edit one into the save file?). I've often, in my assorted "Quasi-Historical" games made ships that the game doesn't like and had to "fix them" via brute force edits(Mostly the odder early game stuff). It's frustrating when the games strict ship definitions (which I broadly approve of, if only to help the AI create opforce stuff that is not too bonkers!) stop you building real world designs/never-were things. As a player I'd like to be able to "de-tune" the ship design police a tad and I'm happy to tell it what sort of role my designs are for... Maybe a tick box in the game start menu or and option to override at the end of the design process? Maybe they can add something in for us "Naval architecture" nerds? Cheers, Alan

I'd like this aspect of the game to be able to be modded.

According to manual floatplane-using aviation cruisers should be possible on CA and larger ships as is in the game. It is not currently possible because of a bug, which is a pet peeve of mine, but hopefully will be fixed in the DLC update.

I was looking more at an actual "Flight deck cruiser" as posited by the Americans in the thirties (mostly as a treaty work around/exploit?) There's several other "paper ships" like the Gibbs and Cox monster and various massive German commerce destroyers. I've designed some very seaplane heavy cruisers along the lines of Tone (though I can't get the turrets to not look silly so ended up with three forwarded triples) and added them into the IDes file for the AI to try ...
