ok, here's the mod i was trying to make - i made it half as random as the ultra-random mod, but hopefully you get some fun surprises here and there. it's a nice way to add some unpredictability to the game while hopefully not going to far overboard
Details:
this mod is to create more unpredictability as to which techs you are researching
All tech is now available twice as fast compared to stock, for example tech available in 1910 is now available in 1905, and 1950 tech is available in 1925. the last tech 'Improved missile guidance systems'(1957) is available in 1928
however that may not mean you get tech faster, it just means you might get a random future tech early at the expense of an early tech - however if you play with larger fleet sizes or have a very large budget chances are you might accumulate tech faster than in the stock game
i also halved the chance of researching any tech to maximum 50%, so there is a 50/50 chance that earlier techs may be skipped over and later techs that are available may get researched early - keep in mind techs that get skipped over can get revisited and researched later
in the stock game some tech does not appear for all nations until 1 nation finishes researching it, where it then has a chance of spreading - i changed this so brand new tech does NOT automatically spread once it is researched by the first nation that completes it, so in order to get access to new unavailable tech you have to steal it, buy it, or share it. it also makes selling your tech a bad idea if you want to keep your tech advances a secret, and it makes buying offered tech nearly mandatory since you don't know if you have or will have the ability to research it later
this mod might be interesting with smaller fleet sized games and/or playing countries with smaller budgets since it gives smaller countries a chance to perhaps get bleeding edge tech that could give them a temporary advantage
and finally gun research is not affected since Naval Gun tech is not in this file
Instructions:
the ResearchAreas2 file usually goes in C:\NWS\Rule the Waves 2\Data
backup your old ResearchAreas2 file since official game updates do not like different files.
have fun!
