Hi Folks,
Is it possible to add intermediate calibres to the gunnery options or is this all too hard coded?
Several spring to mind as possibles:
3.4/3.5 Inch
4.5/4.7 Inch
5.5 Inch
6.4 Inch
7.5/7.6 Inch
9.4 Inch
13.5 Inch
16.5 Inch
Some are more usefully significant than others (RN 4.7 Inch is very close to most 5 Inch and 7.5 Inch is close to 8 Inch initially but gets "left behind" later... 9.4 can be noticeably better than 9/9.2 though and 5.5 Inch is really not greatly modelled by 5 or by 6 Inchers. British 13.5 Inch shifts from a happy 13 Inch to nearly 14 Inch weights etc)

this was discussed before a loooooong time ago, and i don't remember much about the discussion - i think it was dismissed because gun sizes are going to all be different for all different countries, and adding intermediate calibres would just overly complicate things for minuscule differences

(most 13s+14s on the other hand are within 30% or so?) I think there's a good case for a 5.5 inch bracket, after all the game slots half inches of armour in despite it being of marginal effect in combat? I bet you'd notice 4.7" vs 5.5" impact more? As to it being the game of small differences, there are certainly some detailed variations in aircraft performance being modelled? I just wondered if it was something amenable to modding...

Maybe, as a compromise, we could just have half-inch calibres (2.5, 3.5 etc)? Maybe just up to, say, 5.5, then full calibres the rest of the way?
One thing I would point out is that, since gun calibres are researched and upgraded individually, the way gun research works for fractional calibres would need discussion. I'd say there'd be 2 options. 1: Reduce research costs for all gun calibres to account for the additional levels to research, or 2: Have the intermediate calibres research alongside integer calibres (so, for example, researching 5"/Q1 would also unlock Q1 for all calibres between 4" and 5").
Personally, as much as I'd like to be able to build my proper British fleet with my 4.7s and my 13.5s, and my Japs with their 18.1s, I think that it would involve a lot of work from the devs for relatively little gain. I'd much rather they focus on something more important, like bugfixing.

How about we have the same system (2,3,4,5, etc.) but the gun stats vary widely to show these slight calibre differences

I know it's hard coded but is love to be able to add sub-calibres too suit.

Just to address the initial question, even with more advanced modding techniques it would not be possible to add intermediate calibres, only the devs would be capable of doing so.

So countries can develop new guns of existing or new calibres.
It would be easier to replicate historical ships, with historical calibres. E.g. British cruisers with 9.2 or 7.5 inch guns.
