Any information if there will be any ne submarine mechanics?
It probably would't matter much in the earlier eras. But at late game, submarines would've had historically more versatility and also an bigger operational impact, at least that is my understanding.

I'd rather build large battleships then aircraft carriers, so as long as they are even somewhat viable, I'm happy.

There have been some changes from RTW 2. I'm not in the beta but these are things that have been announced to be in RTW 3, so take this with a grain of salt for how accurate it is right now or at release.
The biggest one being that subs are treated the same as other warships on the strategic map. This means that you can move subs around the world to concentrate them where you need them rather than just being a nebules pool that you have no control over other than building and scrapping them.
Other supposed changes are automating the production and distribution of subs so that you dont have to worry about micromanaging them. There may be something like guided missile subs as well for late game.
ASW is getting a boost as well with choppers being added and being able to contribute to ASW defense.
Subs will still not be able to be controlled in actual battles though.

I happen to be an RTW 3 beta tester. Trust me, 40-50k ships work just fine. A 60+k vessel would just be a larger target for torpedoes Lucky! Do you just use greater numbers of smaller ships to deal with big opponents, or do you find airpower to be a better counter? As for the idea of an immunity zone, I will agree with you that it isn't necessarily as good as it might sound. However, real navies evidently thought the drawbacks of extra large battleships to be outweighed by the manifest advantages, so I think that they still play a role. Air power. Also, 40-50k isn't exactly small in terms of RtW 3 battleships - when the AI starts building those, I usually go all-in with aircraft carriers.

Bought RTW2 a couple of years ago, but never really got around to playing it.
Before now that is. Great game. Perfect for my tastes.
And now I learn of RTW3. Which looks like it doesn't try to reinvent the wheel but improve on it.
Color me interested.
