Once again in RTW3 seeing >the same< thing from RTW1 and RTW2 where a ship I ordered "detach and return to base" has turned back to rejoin the force
We've dealt with this yuk for YEARS.
Just make it an option in the drop down menu like "CORE" "SCREEN" to have "RETURN TO BASE"
The player admiral ordered the ship to go home. No wander back to fight.
This one was undamaged sure... it was one of my few remaining wooden minesweepers in a fight with CA and CL about. Go home little buddy.
BUT
It came back.
>>> P.S. option to NOT have destroyers detach all the friggin time. Its not always appropriate.

WILL YOU @#(@#* do this!
Just watched a damaged carrier, who can't even fly planes, spend hours circling outside a harbor and NOT going into it!
Seriously.
Your AI doesn't always work right! Let the players fix it when it goes bonkers!

For another half hour the CV with *** damage has circled 22 nm from a port on detach orders and not gone into it. So long that a SECOND enemy air strike has arrived and hit with a torpedo.
It has been circling there for hours of night and now into daylight for repeat attacks.
This "GO HOME" failure was a problem in RTW 1 and RTW 2 and is again in RTW 3.
Just let the player so GO HOME ... RETURN TO BASE ... RETURN TO PORT
You haven't figured out all the cases nor should the player be ignored when the player has decided it.

Oh! And since Captains are too stupid to slow down when they have heavy flooding there needs to be a
RETURN TO PORT
and
RETURN SLOW
the slow being where they stay under the 10 knots that breaks bulkheads. You don't have them figuring that out either.

Would also suggest that a ship under a proposed return to base order continue to use whatever speed the player last sets and not speed up when switching to AI control (as this often causes damaged ships to sink themselves).

Would also suggest that a ship under a proposed return to base order continue to use whatever speed the player last sets and not speed up when switching to AI control (as this often causes damaged ships to sink themselves). The RETURN SLOW is needed to cover that situation. A ship on RETURN NOW would have been selected for not having flooding risk by the player. While on RETURN NOW a ship may repair its engines so a higher speed could be possible and might be beneficial. Perhaps to escape to port before the enemy carrier planes have rearmed and flown back. As proposed if you were worried about the ship getting new flooding damage the player would choose RETURN SLOW which caps at ten (10) knots or below. Either way it needs to disable whatever code there is for having the ship return to the battle or wander around. A Carrier is bit more complicated. It would likely need to allow its planes to land. Its CAP patrols being launched though is a different question. Any time the carrier turns to launch a cap its not on the desired course and its doubled up when it turns to land those planes XX minutes later. Overall Im thinking a Carrier on either "RETURN" mission would yes land planes. Strikes the player controls. Its whether it could launch its CAP or not.

I would like to STRONGLY support that. I've had countless ships lost due to the very strange behaviour of the "detach" order. I am not sure whether it is intended (representing the will to fight of the crew in a very odd way maybe?) or just a simple bug, but it is generating endless amounts of frustration. This bug is present since RTW2 at least (probably even the 1 although I can't remember for sure). It is a big issue in an otherwise absolutely great game!
Please find enclosed (link to a random file heberger since the forum does not support attachments: uploadnow.io/f/pfFJyxm) my saved game. In the current battle, my (damaged) ship BB Diderot is trying to get back into the fight in spite of numerous orders to go back (and copious amounts of swearing IRL and, I suppose, IG too!).
Kind regards !
P.S.: Just tonight, I lost no less than 3BBs because of this problem, in 1h30 of play... Please help ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

While we're at it there should also be orders to pursue a particular enemy ship formation, and escort/protect e.g. a convoy.

While we're at it there should also be orders to pursue a particular enemy ship formation, and escort/protect e.g. a convoy. Well, to be honest the game really needs an in-depth upgrade of its AI, and the introduction of RTS-like orders: Move here (and the associated "hold Shift to queue move orders"), move here and attack anything along the way, patrol along this route, etc.. Maybe braking communication with the flagship makes you unable to issue new orders, but the queued/ permanant orders should remain.
In fact, the problem here is that the game ignores 30+years of RTS developments in terms of UI. That's fine to an extent, because: - The main demographics of players probably never played classic RTS, - The main appeal of playing this game is more designing ships and fleets rather than using them (at least for me), - The developpers are very few, have a very low budget, and probably lowish game dev experience.
However, I really do think simply borrowing a few quality of life features such as those expressed above would greatly make the battles more enjoyable and less frustrating without breaking the immersion.

General protocol for suggestions and bugs is one per thread. The other ideas should be going in separate threads you can start rather than mixing up the current topic.

Another example of a problem with the AI refusing to go home is a multi carrier battle. One of my carriers has enough damage it can no longer do air operations. Though detached and thus without the HAA screen it keeps wanting to rejoin the other carriers, though it is useless. During one pass through the game it was found by enemy air formations, unable to launch its cap, alone without HAA escort it was sacked. This being hours after it had been rendered unable to do air ops and ordered to the now nearby base.

Same situation - I have been frustrated by this for years (since RTW 1 IIRC), and it seems like a simple UI change. Thanks! John
