Currently Germany can automatically block the passage between the Baltic and North Sea during war. This greatly damage the playing experience of Russia since they have no way to counter such blockade——all of their new build ship were created in Baltic, but blockade area is North Europe. Why the control over Denish strait was not a something that you can fight for? Two of four important water body being automatically block is very unfair for Russia, and since they can't build any ships in Barents/Black Sea/Far East, having Baltic automatically blockade by Germany is more problematic than it would be in real life.

It is possible to send a fleet from the Baltic to Northern Europe and fight 2 - 3 months for breaking the blockade, before your ships start to wear down. Haven´t tried it yet, but should be a nice challenge for Russia.

I may be wrong, but that's what the manual says. -Rule the Waves 3 Manual, page 15, "Canals and other choke points" Basically, if Russia ends up in a situation wherein it has to fight Germany after 1902 or so, it simply cannot win unless Germany makes the active decision to move ships into the Baltic.

It is geographical reality of Russia. But you can in advance station fleet in Northern Sea but you are still limiting to the fact that your industrial base to build new ships is in Baltic.

But you can in advance station fleet in Northern Sea but you are still limiting to the fact that your industrial base to build new ships is in Baltic. The problem is that such a thing is neither realistic nor fun for gaming experience. There should be some ship building capacity for Russia outside Baltic. But no! All ship must be built in the building area. What makes me upset the most is that you can't do anything to counter the blockade. You can't takeover Denmark and start minesweeping. You can't lay your own mine to block German ship from entering Baltic. You can't build or expand the White Sea-Baltic Canal to bypass this blockade. You can't decrease the penalty of blockade by shift your trade route to port in Black Sea or by expanding the trans-siberian railway. What we have now is a one side war, unevenly in favor for Germany, which was not what it is in real life and should not be for the playing experience of Russia.
