The software to edit a .lyr file is reasonably expensive (hundreds of USD) iirc What's an .lyr file? It's a layer file used by ArcGIS. The map is a collection of vector shapes with topology, which is what makes that file special. To open and work with it, you'd need ArcGIS, which is professional cartographic/map making software. Annual personal-use licenses cost exactly $100 USD, I know because I have one. Word of warning, ArcGIS is very complex and is not particularly easy to learn how to use.

There are free alternatives like QGIS, which I used when I was in the field, which could theoretically allow one to edit the map if they were able to convert it to a format that QGIS can read and edit. But there would still need to be a middleman as the conversion needs to be done in Arc. Someone would need to be willing and able to convert the ArcGIS .lyr file to say, .shp and back. If they were able to however, it might open a path to editing the map for people who don't have ArcGIS.

Has anyone actually tried opening the files in ArcGIS? I tried using a lyr converter for QGIS and it tells me that it's not the correct file type.

I just gave it a go, and you're right, ArcMap doesn't recognize it. My guess is, either it's the same file extension being used by some other piece of software or the other bits of the shapefile are scattered around that folder and need reconstructed.

At some point we would like to update the RTW series game engine - we are currently looking at a potential route to do that, assuming it works out as expected. I think your best bet would be to rewrite the whole thing as a web-based game.
This would have the bonus that you could then have an online multiplayer version. I'd like to fight my ship designs against other players' ships not just against the computer designs. Even if battles weren't multiplayer, this would be a big advance.
If you do re-write it as a web app, please don't make the mistake for making it as SPA. SPAs are crap because they don't let you have multiple tabs open in the game. I could easily imagine me having multiple tabs open for almanac, various ship designs, etc.

As someone who deploys on ships for extended periods of time without internet, making a web-based update to this game would be rather disastrous for me. I play this game for months on end while at sea, but would be unable to access it if it were web based. I would recommend adding a multiplayer component to the game, as there are may people who would enjoy that (personally I don't like playing games against other people anymore, as most people in competitive games just try to find the easiest way to exploit things), but keep the game as a standalone, offline program.
On a separate note, I tried editing the MapData.dat files to be able to add in the South American nations (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay) like I have in the past for previous versions of the game, but it doesn't want to take, and in fact, the Mapdata.dat file itself reverted to an un-edited version of the game recently, which is particularly frustrating. I'm not sure what all is required to make this work, but I want to figure it out, as I feel that a South American game would add a bit of fun. Localized, but with a bigger neighborhood just next door.

I would pay DLC money for a much more expanded map, but if it is wiser to create a new foundation/engine(?) first for doing so, I trust the dev

One option would be to have a web-based game that runs on a web server on your local computer. Then you can point your browser to 120.0.0.1 and play the game! No need for an internet connection.

Hi I have merged three mod provinces/possessions into one, 1. Some Sweden Mod 2. The Netherlands Mod 3. Some South America Mod Hopefully these Ports/Battles/Bases/Coastal Fortifications/Invasions will function as intended as for each provinces/possessions were tailor made by the mod maker, credits to them alas i am not releasing anything without providing credit/getting permission. Currently 9 provinces/possessions integrated. (Someone made an example for Wake island, was going to add that but as it was never released as a mod i thought i should increase my chances and get more skills first) 1. I am in way over my head when it comes to this stuff, if anyone can help that would be appreciated, my goal is to add many more provinces/possessions and even more map areas. 1A > Any assistance would be appreciated, i don't expect you to do all the work for me but i have to gain more knowledge 1B > Anyone is welcome to DM me with any knowledge/code/skills/advice 2. In the un-modded game there are like 3-5 provinces/possessions that are already kinda there but un-used and/or not fully coded in ( ) (e.g. Brazil) 3. All other mods i found only edited nations and not the world map, if anyone can think of more mods (for RTWs2 mostly) please suggest them to me. I will be adding them into my mod in the meantime for testing and/or the sake of getting somewhere with this. 4. I could be 100% WRONG (seriously, i'm dumb) but it seems as i look through the MapData for RTWs2 and older versions of RTWs3 it seems the Developer has been making adjustments to values and filling in fields that were once empty. I appreciate what currently seems like an impossible amount of work and/or skill behind the scenes, thanks DEV The end goal is a mod that adds many more provinces/possessions and bases. From which we can do things like add e.g. Pacific Islands and provinces/possessions wherever the coast is, expanding the game. I didn't give this post must proof reading just in case you see a typo etc etc etc Attachments:

If you go take a look at the Ottoman Empire mod, they've added I believe multiple possessions in the Middle East, as well as Persia, I believe? May help you out, at least with adding even more possessions. I think it's called the Sick Man of Europe, as a thread. I'd love if you could release this though! Even if it's not as full as you might like, *any* new map additions honestly are a breath of fresh air!

The latest problem is now creating new missions, as you will find yourself starting in the exact same spots if you had say 50 battles in the south pacific etc, and yes I am working in it, thankyou for the assistance
Will need to check I have the relevant permissions as well

I am time short so if anyone wants to pick my brain or building my work your welcome to, but I'll get around to it
