Is their documentation somewhere that states which aircraft contribute to ASW score and how much that is/how it's calculated? I'm getting this info straight from AircraftBasicData3.dat. The second to last column is the ASW score (if there's two numbers, the second one is the likelihood of killing a sub instead of merely suppressing it). Floatplanes are about 1/3 as effective as flying boats, while helicopters are about 1/3 as effective as floatplanes (extrapolating forwards from 1950). Zeppelins are almost as effective as flying boats at suppressing subs, but are bad at killing them. No other plane types have an ASW score. Thanks for this. I tend to build 1,100 ton Corvettes TP as of 1920s to happily fit 5in guns with there being enough tonnage to fit in a floatplane and hanger. (KE arent allowed catapults so you must have a hanger) Was wondering if the floatplane added to the overall Air ASW as it doesn't show on the ship ASW score. Im surprised enough to ask for verification that helicopters are >worse< at ASW? as in the real world they start to be used for sub hunting with dipping sonars (not sure year invented), sonobouys and small homing torpedoes. Small being fine as the helicopter handled most of the range by flying there.

To address the original post on floatplanes at bases
I wrote articles in the RTW2 forums.
One of these talked about fitting out airplanes on bases. When you have more than one type of plane you get a form of phased search. Plane A at speed A goes to range A and comes back. Plane B goes at speed B to range B and back. The result is similar to a double.
When you first have planes your choices are patrol planes, fighters and floatplanes. Mind not remember when torpedo planes come into play.
Since enemy attacks on bases are very very rare in RTW you could use patrol planes and floatplanes.
Later on you get better ship attack power with torpedo planes so Id go with patrol planes and torpedoplanes thus stopping the bases's floatplanes.
Even later on the medium bombers come out and escpially when they have torpedoes and missiles they replace the torpedo planes.
1930s a 20 point base might have 8 patrol planes and 12 medium bombers... if its in active war zone... reduced to 6 patrol and 4 medium if you just want some more ASW.
Remember air ASW appears to be globally additive. So AFAIK you can use farther away bases to beef up on ASW but that would really be with patrol planes not the floaters.

>for this game< one thing we really miss on the patrol planes and airships is the real benefit of their range. In RTW they fly out from the fixed position base. Patrol planes did forward station where they could fuel or refueled, such as the Japanese plans for Pearl Harbour, and aided by though not mandatory if the patrol plane is "amphibious" with its own wheels or attachable wheels. Airships even more so as they could be flying for days.
The original post on using floatplanes in RTW3 is based >only< on the planes flying out of the fixed position airfield.

On the use in general of patrol planes and floatplanes there is one counterpoint to the floatplanes: They can be flown out of where the ships and convoy needing protection are.
While overall the long range of the patrol plane is a huge advantage in disrupting and sinking subs the subs near a convoy could be disrupted by floatplanes.
An issue though is the sea state in the ocean when the floatplane would be needed to launch. A patrol plane might have the range to launch from a shelter bay, fly for a long time to the convoy then loiter around the convoy.
Patrol planes are better plane per plane but floatplanes do have some use, which Im glad to hear is in the game.

With 1.00.34 now allowing 1 squadron of up to 12 floatplanes per base without it counting against the size cap, I guess this discussion is kind of moot now?
