the british fleet hit the point of no return after losing their BB fleet. there were only one more major action where they lost a further 2 BCs despite my attempt to trick the AI into other engagements. we didn't take any possessions nor invaded any, it was just the turn we started invading hongkong when their government collapsed. would the alternate world umbrella movement pan out differently had it been a german colony for 100+ years? hmm... maybe do go for hongkong in the next war. things are again quiet for the next 4 years until russia decided to play. we honestly haven't much to gain from fighting russia at this point but do need the budget gain if eventually attempting to go against USA. they are sitting at a monstrous 75mil baseresource including possessions, with a 34 capital ship fleet. for us despite winning many wars are still lagging behind at 68mil and 17 vans, 4 of them invading ships only. in the interwar years 3 mid level tech breakthrus happened. 1) improved power training and elevation 2) above water torps for all ships 3) sextuple torpedo launcher (completing the entire light force research tree). and so i'm refitting old vans using casemate secondaries to 5" multi-gun turrets and surface torp launchers like this while also built a new class of 12x6" CL using triple turrets the DDs are refit to the torp six shooter, the freed up weight and centerline mount can sometimes accommodate an extra gun, though sometimes just some mines. also built 2 classes of CA, a total of 5 ships trotted off to the 5 seazones as tonnage filler/anti-raider. they're not exactly necessary but we do have a lot of colonies at this point. more importantly, the CLs are having a tough time intercepting the british CA raiders in the last war. the CL's only option is to flee, unless there're 2 of them intercepting in searchline whereby we stood and fight. 120+ 6" hits to sink a CA. the british CA's heaviest armament is 10x10", doing 30kts. even their end game CAs are on the 10x10" setup albeit 32 even 33kts. therefore we opt for the 12x10" setup, enough to defend against end game CA, but a bit slower. the vineta class is yet again on quad turrets but only 3 of them. i'm not too into a 3 turret layout in Rtw nowadayz as finding the turrets do jam a lot, whether mechanical or battle damage. but as an interim budget design it'll have to do. for new capital ships, the Mackensen class was already commissioned and took part in the last major action against the brits. the 14" +1 guns do a much better job than others' 12 inchers. hits per sunk ship decreased to about 60 or so when the 14" are in on it. we've also newly commissioned Bayern and Baden, same 4 x quad 14" like the mackensen and 100k tons - i can go as high as 110.9 k ton apparently, but dockyard size was just at the 100k mark. these ships are on the end game config, they're yet to have increased elevation, advanced director or secondary director, but those can be easily refitted. the turret top is 7.5, so 0.5" higher than what i usually do for TT = D + 2". but i feel it is needed against future 16 inchers. heck even 8" TT can be penned in previous play-thrus, long as the range is long enough. took a look at what the russians have. this is a 1930 class. and this is currently building i'm not too worried. as long as we don't pull a "Hindenburg".

remember that we took finland from russia - this is a coastal raid, but the ports are actually ours. good tactical option it provides. once you disappear into the port you're safe, whether it is enemy gunfire or flooding. we apparently would need it... the 2 enemy BCs are just what pictured above, 1 Tri Svyatitelya, 1 Fokshani. we spawned the 2 older BCs, Seydlitz and Derfflinger, therefore, again, 12" "awesomeness". it was just when we were both broadside on when night time came. long story short, we pressed the enemy close to the land edge. naturally, flotilla attack. naturally, Seydlitz eats one of our own torps. completely natural, this is. hah! WHAT IS WORSE. a 13" hit from the Fokshani disabled the electric power AT THE SAME TIME. and so Seydlitz just sits there, flooding. and naturally, the enemy lobs torps at such an easy target. Seydlitz eat a further of 2 torps. luckily the flooding wasn't too bad. it must be the anti-torp bulge. but one bad characteristics of the bulge i've found when i refitted my TPS 4 ships with bulges. the first few torp hits do relatively minimal damage. but something like the 4th torp would instantly sink the ship. not via progressive flooding, but the ship would be instantly gone just like that, similar to a turret flash fire just without the loud bang, or like one of the early Bs getting hit by a torp on the magazine. it just disappears from the surface of sea. i'm not completely sure what happens when the bulge is coupled with TPS 2, but i'm not risking it. sent Seylitz directly back to Hango port and left Derfflinger alone to fend for itself. luckily this is night time and 2v1 doesn't exactly translates to tactical advantage if the AI doesn't at least keep his ships fighting together. therefore Derfflinger firstly chased down and sank the Fokshani class, already pretty badly damaged when it was going up against both my BCs and was just limping. it then dealt with the Try Svytitelya, which lasted longer as Derfflinger had 2 turrets jammed and was having a constant 10 flooding. i went a little more aggressive and didn't avoid pulling up broadside to the enemy ship at the risk of being torped - i hoped his torps were already launched since the close range battle had been going on for a while. with both enemy BCs dealt with i steered Derfflinger also towards hango port, the 10 flooding isn't stopping any time soon it seem, and detaches the CL Bonn and Gera, 2 newly commissioned CLs to work on the fleeing enemy destroyers. it was just when Derfflinger successfully entered port when another enemy 2 BC group showed up. apparently they spawned 4 BCs!.... and i just pulled the 2 CLs straight to hango. no point in hanging around when we've already secured a major victory. yep. finland and baltic states are 10 points each. but at times like this it feels like quite worth it taking them 20 points of colonies. in slightly better news, we are invading liaodong peninsula, a 5 point colony defended by 1 coastal arty no less. this is because i sent all my old CAs plus 2 Bs plus the 2 old BB and BCs all to NE asia. russia has no colonies in any other seazones. i'm sure i'll be getting a lot of land combat supports when the enemy couldn't "muster enough ships" and the war just stuck in limbo, because russia currently has no ships in NE asia. but gotta stay with those empty turns nonetheless..

does coastal arty make invasions more rare to spawn?

also, how the heck do you upload pictures in such a big size to this forum? all I see is option for really tiny picture that can't be looked at without being registrated... or linking

does coastal arty make invasions more rare to spawn? yesssss, usually 2 coastal arties make invasions rather unlikely... for NE asia i'm building 3 on the small colonies in case going to war with japan. pics are uploaded to photobucket.com you can also just go to full reply mode and use the insert image icon. don't u use tinypic? so like this

a ROFLSTOMP cruiser action..... have nothing much to say about it seeing it being rather uneventful. except the AI is rather resistant in accepting capital ship battles so this is rare one even. and also, russia hasn't researched director firing yet. all of them are on central firing. eeeeh. one event. CL Gera while going in for a torp run against one of the limping russian BC was torped by a russian destroyer. no flooding! and 1 month repair time only. apparently i put TPS 2 on it. worth it. i counted the hits again. 83 to sink the Sinop. also, have successfully taken liaodong pen. there is still kamchatka left so leaving all ships in NE asia still.

russia collapsed soon after another 2 BCs sunk, 'twas a relatively easy war. did not manage to take any more colonies. we researched 15" Q0 guns, and so Sachsen and Wurttemberg laid down. compared to Bayern, 1" jump in gun cal, adds 0.5" to belt, deck and turret face, everything else stays the same except increased elevation which got researched sometime during the war. 1 month after commissioning, got improved director. the bloody timing. so 2 ships immediately back to dockyards for refit. i'm sure pretty soon they'll come up with secondary director - not gonna do a deliberate refit for that any more. with turret gun mountings, ship design and light forces research maxed out, research progression is speeding up. we got 15" Q1 soon after. i laid down 3 Blucher class, name ship, Yorck, Prinz Eitel Friedrich. 110.9k, the biggest i can build. i'm just anxious to replace the old 12" gunned BCs soon as possible. wanted to go against USA next... gave up on it. our fleet of vans have yet to reach critical mass numbers wise. with me building 'em this big this will take time. next oppo - Italy, to get Egypt. if the trend of tensions permits that is.

we managed to provoke italy enough to war. Blucher narrowly finished working up 1 month beforehand and was sent to the med along with Mackensen and Graf Spee, plus a couple of light cruisers and an assortment of 900 tonner "midget" DDs... i was committing funds for 4 more BB construction, all Sachsen derivatives with slightly better armor, and did not mass mobilize. i could, as cash reserve was 200mil+. but unrest is the key factor, it was shooting up to 3. italy has a mere 4 BBs and 10 BCs. it wouldn't be enough for us to pull constant major victories to suppress the unrest onset, therefore would like to not make it any worse. the 1st opening battle was a battleship engagement. i accept, so does italy. apparently this made him spawn 9 ships! 3 BBs 6 BCs in 3 separate divisions. our forces in the med, ofc, only has the 3 BCs. however we significantly outclass the enemy quality wise. they have no superimposed B turrets, substituting it with a C turret, and mostly 13" gunned except 1 14" BB. these 2 are the most threatening, half of the others are the historical Dreadnought AHIXY turret setup. it was decided. we are going to be the tetragrammaton clerics, trained (built) to handle exactly this kind of odds we are going to keep the range wide and not pushing for a broadside. if they drop to our six o'clock, so be it. the 8 rear firing guns are enough against their 3 gun forward firing setups, plus if we are to chase down any damaged enemy, the ammo on the forward turrets will be needed. and so we first took on a 3 BC group, likely the scout force, still broadside to broadside, damaging them enough forcing their retreat. next came the main force. the Mackensens were commissioned 1kt slower - was not a big deal at the time as the older Hindenburgs and Derfflingers were 28kts with their bulge on, but atm 30kts caps the division top speed. i kept it -2 at 28kts in order not to let any one stray off. the enemy BBs seemed to be almost co-speed to us. thus we let them drift to the rear, until we out ran the gun range of their BC div in the main force before turning in going broadside on against the BBs but just barely. the BB div retreated soon after. the BC div... basically rinse and repeat. when they turned away as well we also turned hot over left/north into counter attack since we've beaten all 3 into retreat. 'twas at that time that the first BC div was spotted to the southwest still coming into us. apparently they were not damaged enough to wanna return home, so we changed the main target to this group. in the end, sank the 3 BCs in their scout force securing a major victory. seeing this result i kinda knew they couldn't put up much of a fight. in the next fleet action after i moved the majority of the vans to the med they lost 5 BCs in the night, with the remaining 2 BBs narrowly escaping back to port. before long their capital fleet was reduced to zero strength without us suffering any major losses, just 2 older CLs to torpedoes. they wouldn't come out and fight for a while, so i had to do the old bait trick, moving back all the BBs to N europe, 2 to MB, 4 to RF to save funds - the 4 BBs under construction were able to continue on uninterrupted. left Blucher and Yorck in the med, Mackensen and Prinz Eitel Friedrich in N europe, Graf Spee to RF, Hindenburg and Seydlitz to MB. all this looked like more of a regional conflict... there were quite a few light force engagements. they had a couple of modern CAs, and i moved in CA vineta from indian ocean in case any more CA action occurs, which didn't. also moved in the 10 new 12x6" modern CLs. 2 of them went up against a 8x9" italian CA and was successful. took 80+ 6" hits. they turned down most of the capital ships engagements except coastal raids. the AI force ratio calc algorithm must be more lax in accepting coastal raids. their last BC blew up in a double flash fire in one of the raids, one magazine hit, one turret hit. and so with the italian government's inevitable collapse we were able to take egypt as planned. 'twas already dec 1948 when the war settled and this trip to 1950 came to an end soon after. managed 124 prestige, not bad on the first 1950 trip. interestingly after the 3 wars before taking on GB we were already surpassing it economy wise. did not feel that - it definitely was the hardest war. probably takes some time before economy strength translates to back fleet strength. GB has lost a total of 54 capital ships. really should annex this guy. but hence commences the 2nd chapter. we are warping back to 1926.1. it is time to take on uncle Sam the juggernaut, who is sitting at a whopping 97mil base resource, 52 vans. we are 84 mil and 22. britain is 68mil and 39. as discovered in one of the prev play thru, best way to whip USA: war against USA, expect raider spam + mostly N europe and SE asia capital ship small scale action. take their SE asia colonies + maine. war against GB. take every colony of theirs on the NA east coast. war against USA again, go for NA east coastal capital ship action.

Oh man, that scoreboard. You gotta stop playing nothing but the most boring nation in the game. meh. different nations are just flying a different flag .bmp texture anyway;p germany can use many of the old SAI ship templates so that became the main reason lol... but yes plan to do a japan next. back to 1930, finally got war vs USA. someone blew up one of our destroyers and i blame them. pretty sure it's russia, or france. they even signed an alliance - european powderkeg indeed. despite my best attempts tension with usa was just lukewarm. but doesn't matter, long as it gives me an excuse to fight uncle sam. managed to sink a BC and CA in the opening coastal raid. i always keep 2 BC in AF and that seems to have paid off. they have no base in N europe yet would constantly send capital ships here, that is i think long as they have the numbers advantage. i am yet again baffled with how to deploy the ships. this is a global war mostly of battlecruisers plus light ships in all seazones. i need preferably 4 in N europe, 4 to SE asia, and 2 each to west africa and indian ocean to fight US' capital ship stream. but firstly, don't have that many. secondly, the old Derfflingers and Hindenburgs are not competitive, i'd rather just RF them... made an error building new ships. i got in 4 more new BBs, the Sachsen derivatives. only got 2 new BCs the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. shoulda built 2 BB / 4 BC. got them reversed. grrr. fleet battle joust vs GB must've left a strong impression to subconsciously go BB heavy. meanwhile we researched secondary director. had been refitting the CLs one class per turn. only the old 1899 bremens and munchens left. just in time. every CL except the new multi gun turreted ones plus the old CAs will be raider spam.

Oh man, that scoreboard. You gotta stop playing nothing but the most boring nation in the game. meh. different nations are just flying a different flag .bmp texture anyway;p You are really cheating yourself out of a much more interesting game if you think that. There are really interesting challenges with the different nations (well okay it's not a challenge in the case of the US). And it's fun to be historically immersive, thinking about how the nations tried to marshal their limited resources historically to address their challenges and comparing your strategy to that. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with playing to 1950 but the game is designed around playing towards 1925 because that's where things are balanced to be in an interesting race. You try to keep one step ahead of Germany as France or Russia, you struggle to remain relevant as Italy or Austria. It's not just about building the biggest baddest ship in history, it's about building a ship that suits your needs.

ah yes interesting. maybe the difference is i find the operational/ship combat aspect of the game more appealing rather than the diplomacy side. for germany you are in a position to generate battles involving extremely large fleets duking it out together yet it remains challenging being the underdog among the big league. i think france/russia/japan can as well it just takes more wins to rise up among the ranks. the smaller nations could be extremely fun diplomacy wise but doesn't do it for me in ship combat. - for japan battles take place in less rainy waters, getting bit sick of the north sea so thinking of a change of place..
see i win wars and play the diplomacy game in order to have the most baddest ship to fight in the biggest baddest fleet combat, ehehehe. we each have different wayz to play the game.
_____ PS i do feel the merit of having bigger ships is better suited to this game - look at BC Lutzow fighting 2 enemy BCs 1v2. if it were a smaller ship it would sink, at best taking 1 of the enemy BCs with it by DD suicidal torp runs. similar scenarios have happened to me many times before, there were battles when it was even 1v4, the result was just that, i lost my BC, the enemy at best lost one BC by me trying the darnest to torpedo it. it was thus that i build them this big these days.

For me the battles are more about seeing the plan I lay 10 years earlier come to fruition then the battle itself.

deployment (for the moment...) scapped BB Kaiser, Kaiserin, Friedrich der Grosse, the TPS 1 24 knotters; scrapped BC Derfflinger, Lutzow, TPS 1 and not enough firepower. 2 old BB Pommerns to NE asia, force filler only. AI sometimes moves ships to NE asia for whatever reason. any battles over there have to decline. 2 Konigs, 2 Bayerns, 2 Sachsens to SE asia. 2 Schlesien and 2 Salamis stay in N europe. 2 old BCs remain MB. see no use putting them anywhere... 2 Hindenburgs to west africa. 2 Mackensens to indian ocean. the 3 Bluchers to SE asia. expect some action there definitely. 2 Scharnhorsts remain in N europe. 2 old B Wettins to NE asia. also force filler. All the old CAs and CLs to raider duty spread evenly on 6 seazones. the 16 modern CLs half to SE asia, half stay in N europe. short ranged 5/600 tonner DDs to CP as usual. 900tonner DDs to SE asia for CP later. 1100 and 1500 tonners 39 to SE asia. the 29 V2 class remain in N europe. the 21 2000t+ DDs stay MB and wait for director refit. MS: august piper short ranged MS to CP. Columbia and Eide Siebs med ranged and to SE asia for CP later. - CP ships tend to return to build area but not if there's 1 or more seazone between the CP seazone and build area seazone. therefore if i set them to CP in SE asia they'd remain there. problem: lack of funds. as i discounted everybody's baseresource by 0.8 it is as expected. halted 2 new capitals under construction but not enough. will see. usa currently has 66 vans. nice.
