slow boiling progression so far. tensions with GB remained high which i really don't want, while everybody else were all in the green. after 1905 i was losing patience, had to spend some money on intelligence against Italy, and sacrificed some prestige points to get universal tension drops, only to get GB tension back to the green. at one point prestige hit 15 and was close to getting fired (dead end!..) Italy just didn't wanna fight us, probably since A-H's economy has progressed to be more than 50% of his. but on those "choose a nation to up tension" events I picked them all on Italy, and finally the game's attention diverted from GB to them. in the end, at the end of 1906, we issued an ultimatum to them from taking over Mozambique, and finally got us a war. on the research front, things have been interesting. Russia has been very nice to us. Want Q0 7inch guns? sold. Want heavy wing battery? Sold. Want 12inch guns? Sold!! all the big research breakthrus have been from the bears. germany.. you were worthless. seriously. and so with manual dock size builds we were able to build same and better ships at home compared to the foreign legion legacy fleets in no time. we now have 4 Bs, 3 Kaisers and 1 Arpad class - latter being the Kaiser derivative domestically built; 4 CAs, 3 Kaiser Karl VIs and 1 "Kaiserin und Königin Maria Theresia" class (geez, how long is this name really? luckily this will be the only ship in the class!) - latter the Kaiser Karl VI derivative; plus 6 CLs and 19 DDs. Italy has 2 Bs, 7 CAs, 10 CLs and 23 DDs. they're blockading us by sheer cruiser counts. but no worries, pretty sure this would change in no time. their Bs and 10inch armed, and their best CA is this: and it's currently the only one. the other CAs are either 2x10"ers or 4x9"ers. the total tech progression is very slow as well. most nations have either 1 or 2 levels of tech researched only, that is 6 years into the game. as said for A-H the biggest break thrus on capital ship building all came from russia. meanwhile i realize a small mistake was made. with no oversea colonies i shoulda built the Bs with short range. oh well, lessen learned next time. good thing in games - one can always do over. also, with heavy wing battery, 8 main gun CAs can be built. if only we can find the budget, what with wars and battle losses. i suspect when the war is over, everybody will roll out 3 centerline turrets and move on to BCs. tech era missed again, probably. bah. the war will continue tomorrow...

1. never underestimate early tech era's inability to land any hits even at point blank range. Fleet battle. A single Italian CL got lost and surrounded by our fleet. Despite swarmed by our ships, it remained afloat for a long time. It has two torpedo launchers. 1 on each side. Thus, it torpedoed 2 Bs. Luckily, both survived. But wtf. 2. the (rather simple) doctrine of the Italian Navy - turn tail and run back to port upon contact with the enemy. 3rd rate Navy of a 3rd rate Nation, this is. anyway, got 2 of their Bs, 2 CAs and 3 CLs so far 3 months in. but since we are always the pursuer torpedo risks are pretty high, mostly the only way to get good results is by pressing them against the coast. blockading on 3.5:1 force ratio, they still have 5 CAs but i reckon the AI sent them all out for raider duty. honestly this has been a very small scale war even including the 1st fleet battle. but for economic gain purposes, it is very necessary.

15 months into the war and lots of smallish battles, mostly involving CAs and some CLs. the only time Bs come into play Italy got a CA in and all of them ran back to port. speed is important! with 2mil+ monthly balance, layed down a 8x10" heavy CA. it costs 2.62mil a month and the budget cannot support any more new builds. meanwhile GB, German, Italy and USA has already started building BCs - all on 2 turrets i'm sure. but experience tell me we're not entirely behind, 8x10 > 4x12. however our tonnage is not great, 17.4k vs the 20k+ BCs. we'll need something heavier, preferably with 8" secondaries, hmm... and 20 months in, Italy collapsed. we've not incurred 1 point of unrest.. good deal. was expecting a 40months+ war but tis much sooner. i'm taking both Sardinia and Sicily in the Med. Eritrea is in the Indian Ocean so, they can keep it. meanwhile, GB is building 23200 ton Bs. I can't imagine what that is!! ok, i know what that is. we got something similar building now. this is awesome. "gen 1" Bs and CAs. i can tell from the template that it is of the Nassau BB and Invincible BC template. The minerva has 10x10" but the wing turrets graphics are covered by the heavy secondaries. just.. awesome, if only we could get more of them. i thought about building the B with cramped. but it is only 1000 ton difference. and cramped drives up unrest so discarded that. however, a few turns after this, 3 centerline turrets researched. along with 8" Q1 guns, 12" Q0 guns. TYPICAL.

And so we got our first proper BC. It is slow, short ranged, but decently armed and armored. We still went for a heavy secondary setup, because the 6x12" really is insufficient considering early FC, especially forward firing firepower. high hopes for this ship!

first BB. 50mil collected from taxpayers. the navy will certainly have to oblige! basically the classic Dreadnought setup, except with provision for CDF. meanwhile, tension with Britain is rising. to be or not to be, that is the question...

the tensions juggling worked. War with France! The good thing.. we now have more vans than the frogs, 2 BCs and 1 BB working up. compared to them with just 1 BC. the Bad news is by building that dreadnought we managed to incur a lot of unrest. at one point it was shooting up to 6. managed to get it down to 5 by curbing expenses. with war breaking out it was an unrest reduction of 2, it is now at 3, but still not great. Also, the France BC is a 32.5k ton beast, armed with 12x14" guns. Looking at game save, nobody has researched 14" guns yet. opening the France BC ship design file it's got Q9 main guns - game bug! can Q9 guns still function in battle? if yes, will it have hyper penetrations and range?? gonna see what can be done about this... with 6mil+ balance and war breaking out, we can now start building new ships. layed down 6 more 700 tons DDs - they commissioned with 1 kt faster, so gotta lean on them. also new BC class. same turret config as the BB, but with Q1 12" guns.

fleet battle. got 1 B and 1 CA singleton each in his own division. i can only curse the stupidity of the battle generator. what i do nowadays is edit the battle .sac save directly. since the .sac is completely text format it is easily doable, although a bit tedious. it'd be great if some 3rd party tool can make an interface of it, but digress.. it is edited to be like this, only 2 capital ship divisions, but each with 4 ships in them. also the game pops a warning about the French BC having main gun Q9. i edited my own BB to have MQ=9, and tried to see the gun data, but unable, with an error window. will see how the combat goes against the BC.

From experience Q9 means the game has thrown a derp and basically the ship has no main guns. They will not fire at all, making the BC worthless to the French. Incidentally is the BC a Gangnut configuration? Cause a number of people have reported the AI derping out with that one.

Yah that is the Gangnut layout, quad centerline triples none superfiring, the bugs thread has a fair # of them by now. Has to do with a change made to design selection by the AI a couple patches ago people suspect

ok that is good to know, it is apparently BC3X2.tdf. also France built it hugely overweight yet no FloatMod=. russia is building a same ship. perhaps the design is too advanced tech wise and AI unable to compensate.. will see if reducing some stats will make a difference.. will see.

after 2 more large battles, the frogs have no more Bs left. but they got their own BB built on the Nassau template. it went up in a turret flash fire in a night duel against my 2 BBs. Looking at the debrief, apparently they're still on central rangefinder! come to think of it, we bought the central firing tech from Germany. obviously when the war started we'd rebuilt all of the ships with the updated FC, with a few CAs and Bs sent to emergency refit at war outbreak. kudos to the jerries, they have redeemed themselves. also got me wish to fight gen 1 CAs. the french CA was on 8x8" sec, but my own 3 CAs in the battle were all gen 0. interestingly! what sent the french CA to the bottom (after it was already destroyed but still floating) was a 4" AP hit from a DD, detonating the sec battery on 4" of armor. in one of the previous playthrus, a 6" AP from an enemy CL penetrated one of my BBs 22" belt at point blank. i think when the range is close enough anything can pen anything. 27 20:54 4 in 732 yds ## Secondary battery hit SEC * Flash fire! Ship blows up! (DD Boa, AP) after this battle, our unrest is now back down to 0. good deal it is. France has the Med as home waters but its build area is NEurope so i can't blockade him. gonna spam some AMCs for raider duties.

2 CLs in the fight of their life against a french CA. how it got to this: France only has 4 CLs. they are probably all tasked to raider duty. when a cruiser battle is generated, the battle generator puts the CA in since they have no CL on AF status - tis also why late game CAs have a place, they get spawned into CL and even DD fights and can pwn anything on oversea colonies where there're often no capital ships stationed. Saida soon got set on a huge fire and had to be detached. but the fire got outta control and the ship was lost. Helgoland fought on, we launched a flotilla attack to peel off the enemy CAs screening DDs, which was successful. Helgoland managed to get a torpedo on target, and this sealed the fate of the enemy CA. Actually I fought this battle 3 times. the first time, Saida went off in a flash fire, but Helgoland survived, and sank the enemy CA. we went on to chase the surviving french DDs. what I didn't know was, the forward turrets were all outta ammo. i got close to the DD's stern, appalled that no hits were scored at all despite dead on his deep six, turned right to avoid going side by side but too late - it ate 2 torps and sank immediately. phuck that. loaded the save and did it again. but i still didn't know about the ammo situation. Saida got an engine room B* hit, speed dropped to 18 kts. detach, Helgoland on point, another engine room hit, speed down to 17kts. unable to chase the enemy down, he escaped back to port. phuck that too! loaded the save and got this result. luckily the french CA got its rear turret knocked out, so i got Helgoland sitting happily on that stern chase outta harms way. but i was once again appalled by the lack of main gun hits, nothing. finally i realized that both forward guns are outta ammo. it'd be great if ammo can be transferred. at least in SAI ammo was not counted by each turret. the new modelling has more detail, but i actually like the old way.

mwahaha! the torpedo AMC scores. concealed raider intercept by a french CA. it ate 3 torps in short succession and sank. mwahaha!!! we lost the AMC by outta control fire. but ofc that doesn't matter. gains 1 prestige!
