FS players were glad when the Fighting Steel Project started. It allowed to play FS with a greater choice of ships and scenarios and especially
included the operational/strategic part by means of Thunder at Sea (TAS), an excellent game on its own, rich of detailed WW2 scenarios and campaigns.
For those who can no longer make FS run on their PCs, the possibilities to fully exploit TAS are limited.
For my part, I continue to play TAS. When the game switches to the tactical phase, a FS scenario file is automatically written on the PC hard disk.
By editing the file via the notepad and copying it on a Word temporary file you have the list of the ships participating in the battle and many other details.
Using the "find" function of Word and asking "name", in a short time you get a list of all the ships engaged.
At this point you can set a scenario for Steam and Iron, representing the units with ships already in the SAI data base or specially designed for this purpose.
It is true that the ships of WW2 are not represented accurately in SAI, but for the fun of the game this does not make much difference.
A more expeditious manner, is to assess the likely outcome of the battle based on the force ratio and on some roll of the dice.
When the tactical phase is finished, you must introduce the results of the battle on the TAS special menu. The TAS scenario then resumes to run.
This process is obviously quite laborious and it is not recommended when there are many battles to fight one after the other.
Hopefully NWS will revitalize TAS - or create a similar new game (SAI 2.0?) - for the benefit of the fans of TAS like me.
