'Advance, Britannia!' is a Rule the Waves play-by-council game which I am hosting on its own forum, played by members of this forum's community. Currently, we're entering the final stages of the pre-game phase and are about to start the game properly, so this is the perfect time to join.
What is a play by council game?
A play-by-council game is a game which is played by a single player, but all strategic decisions are made by a group on a forum.
As far as I know, this is the only such game of RTW to ever be attempted. There have been a small number of interactive AARs and shared-save file games before. Play-by-council takes this concept to the extreme by making the game as collaborative as possible.
I decided to start this game because I felt it suits RTW particularly well - the greatest attraction of this game for me is that there is no right way to play, only different play styles with their own strengths and weaknesses, mirroring the complex reality of real warfare. The intention of this game is to take all of the theoretical discussion and debate that people on these forums enjoy, and give it a functional purpose.
What's special about this game?
Because we've managed to amass a rather large number of players, we've been able to go beyond the initial play-by-council concept. We've now developed specialized roles for players to fill, including a Design Board, a Construction Board, and Theater Commanders. Anybody is always free to take up any role they like, and if you don't want any existing role, you can simply create your own.
So far, we've already had our first design competition and several ballots which followed some very in-depth and enjoyable debates.
Where do I sign?
You can find our dedicated forum here: rtwplaybycouncil.createaforum.com/index.php
You can register to join the game on this thread: nws-online.proboards.com/thread/1318/play-council-registration
To join you need to create an account, which only requires a username, password, and email address (I suggest using a throwaway address if you're concerned about spam.) Anybody can join at any time, and there is no required commitment - get as involved as you like.
The more players we get, the more fun it will be for all concerned, so please consider giving it a try!
