Sorry if this is somewhere in the manual and I missed it, but is the ONLY way to upgrade ships' experience points by training them? Do they not gain points by being in action, for example? Thanks.

Quality can increase after action as well

I believe Fred is correct, combat experience can help increase crew quality.
