A shame that the Italian cruisers outran my battlecruisers, evaded the two air strikes that I know about, and escaped under cover of darkness, but at least my battlecruisers' 12" guns hit the CL a couple of times; should be a nice minor vic...
...tory for the Italians...
Sigh, early airpower at its finest - losing so many aircraft to landing accidents and mechanical failure that it actually costs me more to patch them up than it costs the Italians to patch up a CL that got hit by a pair of 12" shells...
Edit: ... You straddled the target while firing a single gun at them? What did you do, skip the shell off the water so that it bounced over the target?

Hmm...
... I think Niobe might just have earned an eternal place in the Museumballed Fleet once it's time to retire it. Sure, the Italian cruisers aren't exactly peer opponents, but there were still four of them, I'm not running gunnery training, the destroyers essentially didn't contribute, and Niobe only has Central Rangefinders and 160 rounds per gun.

The gun layout on that Niobe is one of the strangest I have seen.

Why? Seems to me like a standard AFKY CDF layout. I know, the turreted secondaries would disable CDF, I don't know what the logic there is.

I wanted more guns in the broadside, didn't want to increase the size of the cruiser too much further above what I'd normally do for a CL, and don't like the aesthetics of having the wing twin turrets abreast of one another when there's less than four of them.
Also, realistically speaking, you could probably fit the configuration used onto a narrower hull than if the twin turrets were abreast of one another, but the game doesn't account for that sort of thing and I'm not sure you wouldn't be able to manage the same thing just by shifting the twin turrets closer to midships.

Oops... Guess that comes from only looking at the graphics instead of the description. I mistook the single wing turrets for secondary guns. BTW I’d probably have run three single wing turrets a side, for ROF and redundancy (and, admittadely, looks).

Two turns into the game and my spy reports the French are making this thing...

I do see the value of it, get some extra guns for minimal weight. I guess I'm too bound by symmetry, so would probably have put the 2 forward wing turrets as doubles, and the 2 rear wing turrets as singles.

I don't really care for shielded mounts on light CAs, fully-turreted single mounts are a bit expensive in tonnage costs, and 6,500 tons is already getting to be a bit on the large side for a second class cruiser.

1950's German unrestricted warfare is a bit strong, this is the first turn in the war.

So, Cantieri Aeronautici e Navali Triestini, about that new torpedo bomber prototype you're offering me... ... did you happen to acquire a manufacturing license from Piaggio recently? Perhaps for their P.69 torpedo bomber?
(Yes, yes, the cruise speed is 60 instead of 62 and the maneuverability is 5 instead of 6.)

They CANT even steal copy the plane properly! What a shame...

The battle is over. We're heading back to base. Is it really so hard to understand "follow me, we're going home?"

No words are necessary:
Oh, and did I mention the 20 that finished last month? Or the fact that it's October 1904?
Historical Germany playthrough, here we go
(Yes, I know they were slow on the uptake historically, but let me have my fun )
Edit: Bit early, but what the heck:
