Ok, can someone explain me step by step how can I create a small carrier playinjg with Japan in the demo? I tried to create a new from scratch, and I can't, tried to refit a existing ship, and I can't, so what I need to do in order to have my first small carrier for doctrine and learning?

1) Find a ship under 16000t, but preferably over about 7000t, preferably over 20 knots 2) Remove all the guns 3) Add a flight deck and aircraft 4) Rebuild the engine if speed is below 20 knots 5) Check the design, should ask to redesignate it as CVL 6) Fix any errors, add guns for self defence if desired (remember to reduce turret armour to save weight) 7) Done
Here is the process in a short video - sorry that the 'check' page doesnt show as I only captured the design screen itself;

Step 1: Look for a ship that is under 16000 tons.
Step 2: Rebuild ship and increase ship speed to at least 20knots if this is already there proceed to step 3.
Step 3: Reduce main armament to 4/3 inch and make sure you only have wing turrets (I do 4 wing turrets but this is up to you.) mainline is a no no issue. (Go a head and remove any other secondary turrets and torpedoes. You are gonna need the space.)
Step 4: Select option to add flight deck. Add planes till full. If you can get more then 24 planes into a 16kton ship I'm doing something wrong
Step 5: Press save button, game will prompt to change classification to CVL. Press Yes.
And now you got a CVL.

Why? I think 4" Single DP-guns with 10" face and 3" roof fits best
Yesterday I was shocked while converting one of y old Japanese BCs

Is there some way to auto-generate the appearance on refits? I somehow managed to add a flight deck automatically while fiddling, but never managed to repeat that. Eventually just went for quick and dirty appearance without superstructure and traditional funnel (which is kinda historical).

As someone who brazenly always uses the auto-generate feature for superstructures I would also like this answer

HMS Argus/Furious style best style. It's Vindictive and 1917-refit Furious if you want the forward flying-off and after landing deck separated by a traditional superstructure; Argus, 1920s-refit Furious, and Langley were the flush deckers. There's also as-built Furious for the forward flying-off deck battlecruiser-carrier hybrid. You can also use the chasers (1, 2, 3, and 4) in addition to or in place of the wing turrets, and you can have up to eight main or secondary battery 3" or 4" guns without taking penalties; not sure about other calibers because I've only been working with DP guns in the demo. I prefer the wing turrets aesthetically - if you have a flight deck the full width and breadth of the ship, the chasers are right about where the forward and after elevators ought to be - but a complete set of chasers gives you 360-degree coverage whereas four wing turrets gives you either 120-degree (all on one side) or 240-degree (at least one wing turret on each side) coverage.
Also, if the ship is fast enough and no larger than 15,500 tons, you might consider adding bulges - it gives you about an extra 500 tons to work with, but will cost you 10% (with standard rounding) of the design speed in service. I've gotten up to about 30 aircraft on 15,400t 25kn battlecruiser conversions by bulging them and replacing the engines with a plant designed for 24kn (after bulging, ships with 24kn plants and ships with 25kn plants both achieve 22kn in service, assuming neither gets a speed event on commissioning).
Not sure if the extra aircraft are worth the lost speed, but it's something to consider.
If you want a cheaper rebuild (probably not a bad idea considering the state of the navy's finances at the start of the demo game), replacing the engines isn't strictly necessary for a ship that's capable of at least 20 knots, though you won't get quite as many aircraft onto the ship. For the ship shown above, a similar rebuild that doesn't replace the engines would cost about 2-3 million, and the resulting CVL would be able to carry about 26 aircraft with or 23 aircraft without bulging the ship.

Purpose build an AV of around 12000 tons then add a flight deck. You'll have no issue fitting the full 34.
