My experience is still very limited, but from reading posts of others and manual, I get some thoughts.
Plane classes and their divergence:
- Now every plane model is assigned to it's class, though historically there are some modifications, which change it. So I suggest to add random chance to change class during purchasing new modification. Most common may be: scout-fighter and medium-torpedo bomber fluctuations, so Flyingbrick Mk.1 (fighter) may become parent of Flyingbrick Mk.2 (scout) with some loss of it's "fighter" characteristics, and vice versa. Those processes should mostly took part in 1910-1920-th, when those classes are rather close.
- Early aviation need even more love. Why not allow AV to have "regular" squadrons, so they would be easier to operate. Also, planes of other classes may occasionally have floatplane ability till late 1920th, so AV may become strike ship, not only reckon one. (I mean for example torpedo floatplanes like Levasseur PL.14, or float fighters).
- Torpedo flying boats! (Well, maybe they are here, I've just don't see them in demo)
Some more control of planes:
- Not only fighters should be allowed to CAP. Floatplanes and diving bombers with at least 2 firepower should have opportunity (with less success) to perform this duty, as they did historically.
- When plane is manually assigned to reckon mission, would be nice to add "patrol" checkbox, so it will fly around the region until fuel or daytime is about to end.
- CAP of burden - if your strike wave return from mission at moment their CV is under attack, would be nice to command them to protect her from attack at all cost (so all undamaged planes with some fuel treated as bad fighters for some minutes).
All this may be balanced with lesser effectiveness of air strikes, especially early ones.
And finally, interface:
- would be great to have different names for different purpose squadrons, something like "1F squadron" for fighters instead of "123456 group".
