Hi, So I'm running into the following problem: every time I want to design a CV, I get the following message: In case the image is too small, the error is "Error: The design board will not autorise such a large ship without at least 8 x 8 in guns!" And if I lower the tonnage of the ship this drops to 8 x 6, but still. It seems like some kind of check for CAs is being done while I have selected CV? Auto generating CVs generates the ship just with small-ish DP guns, so these are pretty useless...while slamming four twin 8" guns on a CV is also a waste of tonnage. (plus the AI does not seem to have this problem) Anyone else running into this problem?

page 33 of the manual The first CV (not CVL) built by a nation must be equipped with at least eight 8" guns or larger. Purpose built carriers must have a flat deck on top of belt armor scheme.
in short this rule is for historical purposes

Yes, almost all early carriers had a relatively heavy anti-surface gun battery mounted, the idea was that the ship could protect itself against a light enemy surface force...this was later understood to be, lets say 'less than a good idea', and later designs/refits removed this battery and often used the space/weight for smaller DP and lighter AA guns.

at the time of the first proper carriers their airwings usually dident carry large enough bombs or powerfull enough torpedoes and quite lackluster planes to be extremely effective
and against smaller ships like cruisers and destroyers they were very very hard to hit with torpedoes and bombs when they were evading and also if a carrier got ambushed it could to some extent defend itself against a light cruiser having evaded air attack or snuck up on the carrier
in game it does make sense to have the rule although i believe it should be for certain nations only nations such as france and germany never had planes to make carriers with 8 inch guns (then again they never had any early carriers or good carriers for that matter)

Is the restriction removed if you convert a ship to CV with 8x8”, or is it only removed if you purpose build a CV with 8x8”?

Is the restriction removed if you convert a ship to CV with 8x8”, or is it only removed if you purpose build a CV with 8x8”? Conversions with the appropriate armament will cover the "first carrier needs guns" requirement.

It is removed as soon as your first CV is commissioned, however you build it. If you design a CV class while your first CV is still building, the second class will still have the restriction.

Once the 8x8" CV is built you can take it into a rebuild to remove them.
During the original design you can size your airwing to 80 or 100 without the 8" guns. Then add the 8" guns and trim the air group down to a working size. During the rebuild remove the guns and restore the air group size.

I'd also suggest turning the 8" turrets into 4" or 5" twins with AA capability... Obviously, first line of defense is the CV's fighter CAP, but it's a standing patrol, not a interceptor launch. If I could create a taskforce that always deployed together, I'd match one CVL (fighters only) with the CV (mixed air fleet).

Ive run experiments in this game with some heavy guns on the CV. For this game... and not so much in real life... there is wierd things like the CVs getting stuck along shore lines letting any ships or even coastal batteries engage them.
Emphasis on the "in this game".
For this game its a plausible idea to have 4 of 8" to 12" guns to have the range to hopefully slowing down pursuit. I wouldnt bother with anything above that and even 10" is practicable vs CA and CL. In my own experience if a BC catches a "stuck" CV its doomed anyway. The positions to mount them should include the 3 and 4 points which are the single barrel rear guns to act as stern chasers shooting to slow down chasing ships.
Plus in the mid fleet strategies when the CV is still in the same sailing group as your battleship the few 8+" guns makes it safer to pull away DDs screening the CV to join in the main attack. Still a risk but its more managed.
