Wir waren die Herrscher eines Reichs - A Weimar Republic AAR
All of you have probably seen the amazing, ambitious and fascinating AARs which started appearing for Rule the Waves II, most importantly the absolutely amazing, inspiring work of akosjaccik with his model based AAR 'Indivisible & Insignificant' and mycophobia 's Canadian AAR using the game From the Depths to modell all of his ships! Not to mention the other wonderful AARs written by this amazing community I have the honour of entering. While I cannot offer you the same amount of work, nor the quality those wonderful creators bring to the forum, I will try to bring my own skills to the table and at the very least, provide you with more information and visual references I will be able to find to bring some light on the usually overlooked part of German Navy's history. While I don't know how much images, work or content I will bring, I will try to do the best I can with the time I will have aviable, and hopefully, bring you some enjoyment!
The plan and house rules
Much like the 'Indivisible & Insignificant' and 'From the North' AAR, I made one major house rule for myself. Similarly to them, I must provide more information and some reference for every ship before it will enter service with the Reichsmarine (And later the Kriegsmarine). I looked over my options and modelling, drawing or creating a ship within a game other than RTW is rather hard to me, to the point where the progress wouldn't be smooth. (I don't have a 3D printer or the 3D modelling skill to provide satisfying content, my experience with shipbucket style drawings is rather low and I am rather sure that if I tried to draw blueprints for every ships I will make the quality would decrease over time.) Which is why I chose this way of bringing some light on every ship I will use. It is rather vague, but I am sure that you will see what I got in mind soon enough when I will start out with my legacy fleet.
The second house rule comes to the limitations of the treaties that come in the game and the starting point of the Reichsmarine as shown in the game. The Reichsmarine size was set by the treaty of Versailles and while not quite big and severely limiting, the navy was kept 'big enough' to ensure that the Reichsmarine would be able to tackle and win against the Soviet Navy. In the game the legacy fleet generation tends to be rather generous to the Soviets (And well, for that matter, it is generous to France and Italy too while the three large navies can go bite a rock at times.) and so I think that the victorious powers would let Germany to complete some of the unfinished warships which were left in drydocks at end of the Weltkrieg. Which is why I will add seven Mackensen class hulls under construction to the Reichsmarine. Two of the seven vessels can be constructed at the start to comply with the treaty and further ships will be allowed to continue construction after certain conditions will be met. (From tension rising, Soviet Navy growing more powerful or an agreement being signed with FR or UK.) The same way, construction of the Panzerschiffe with 11 inch guns will be allowed if conditions will be met, despite the 8 inch limit of the treaty.
Interactivity is also important to me. I will often present options for you, the wonderful community to interact with the story and decisions made by the Reichsmarine in this AAR. Be it simple A/B/C type of offer for a decision/focus that the navy should take, change of foreign policy, or even requesting naval designs for the Reichsmarine to fill a certain role. Any help with making this AAR better is welcome as well of course - I am by no means an experienced writer and I am happy to hear your suggestions and feedback!
Ah yes, and before I end, big thanks to mycophobia and aeson who helped me setting this AAR up!
Current Progress/Discussion
Presently I am working on writing information about my starting ships and explaining some the more interesting things which don't match our real history, to put a point of divergence, as well as providing a little bit of prologue. (For example the fact that the Weimar Republic still rules in Danzig or why can I have aircraft.) I am terribly sorry for any delays or slow progress at this point as I have some familly matters to attend to, but hopefully, this should be done rather soon. If you have any question or if I missed anything important, feel free to ask immideately! I will be aviable on the forums and you can probably also catch me on RTW's discord!
