I've just been given the opportunity to seize a ship building for another power for the first time in Rule the Waves 2, and it occurs to me that opportunities to seize ships under construction for other powers are generally fairly rare (at least, going by my experience in Rule the Waves 1 and 2), so I'm curious: Given the opportunity, would you seize ships building for another power, and why or why not?

i don't bother - i prefer the ships i design better, and if i'm at war already i'd rather not gain another participant

I usually play small powers, so a chance to snag myself a nearly free battleship is almost always worth it.

As above, I usually play med-small powers so I can always use an extra hand, and if nothing else, its free gunnery test target >=)
That said if I am pretty certain it will drag me into a three way war, I will sometime reconsider.

Qiestiom: if I get a ship into my fleet with better tech (foreign yard construction, war reward, seizing things under construction) will my research benefit from studying those things?

It does for foreign yard construction. I have no experience with it for other cases but it is so seldom and you are usually leading power in case of seizing ships that it probability would be close zero even if it is possible.

Qiestiom: if I get a ship into my fleet with better tech (foreign yard construction, war reward, seizing things under construction) will my research benefit from studying those things? You can only seize ships being built for other powers in your own yards, and ships being built in your yards use your technologies so seizing them won't give you anything.
As to taking a ship as reparations in a treaty, I've never seen it give technological benefits, and even if it hypothetically could I wouldn't really expect it to since most of the time you'll be taking something that's been in service for at least a year or two and had to have been designed at least two and a half to three years.

Um yeah seizing your own tech does not sound beneficial 😂 not my best day. Well I've been wondering on tech transfer from reparations cause I had cases where the ship I got was much more advanced then mine and I can imagine gaining ships with tech I skipped this way as well. On topic though, I pretty much never seize , the ai designs are usually so bad/even the better ones don't fit my fleet. I actually scrapped some ships right after seizing cause they're just a waste of funds l

It would be nice if you had the ability to look at the stats for the ships offered. I certainly don't have the entire enemy fleet memorized and the information provided about the ships offered is often too scant to make an educated choice. I'll usually take the ship but it is often shuttled off to secondary duties.

Playing as Germany in one of my first RTW2 games I demanded a Russian CA in a peace settlement. It was a fast, beefy, well-armed proto-battlecruiser that had caused me a lot of headaches during the war. Because of its size and speed I captured it solely for the purpose of converting it into a CVL when I got the tech. 3 years later and much to my chagrin, I discovered that the maximum limit for CVL conversion is 15,000 tons... this ship was 15,100
