In 1.08, I have encountered an issue where mothballed ships will be selected for battle, and show up as AF the next turn. It seems to be happening in that order (not ships randomly being assigned to AF and then being selected for battle), because I have not encountered the issue during peacetime (where MB ships remain MB forever), and only the ships that were selected for battle on a given turn come out of mothballs. "Donau" was selected for a battle last turn, and is now in AF (it's supposed to be waiting in MB until I have the funds to run a carrier conversion).
The relevant save is attached as a 7zip archive. A *.zip wouldn't fit within 1 MB (or, indeed, within 2 MB), so I tested my available compression options for best compression ratio. 7zip got it to ~300k, a bzipped tar archive came to ~840, and nothing else fit, though gzip came close.
