Hats off to a more user friendly 1.08 Air Management. Playing is now more fun because you don't have to spend so much time clicking to manage your squadrons due to multi-select and other improvements. I'm going to go over it and suggest a few more things to make it better.
1st, what's great. In the right hand panel I can sort using the Tabs for things like Experience or what Base the Squadrons are located. Then I can multi-select squadrons and easily Disband them or send then to Reserve. I found sorting by Experience and keeping the best squadrons and Disbanding everything else suited my needs best. I'd usually leave squadrons on the Carriers because I never Reserve experienced carriers in times of Peace and instead keep their airwings and ship experience as best as I can for when the next war breaks out. For the rest, I'd sort by Base and remove every Squadron to Reserve. Then I'd Disband anything that wasn't at least Good Experience. That left me with a much lower upkeep.
Then I'd select Reserve and multi-select again any squadrons I wished to reduce in total size all at once. This is hugely helpful to maintain the exact size of force I want in peace, reducing my Squadron size from 20 to 10 or less. Then it's just a matter of multi-selecting again to changing their size and dragging and dropping where they are needed most when the next war happens.
I can tell you that this saves me 10-15 minutes at the end of every war painful click micromanaging that used to be necessary as your Naval Aircraft budget would kill you in peace time if it wasn't immediately reduced. So this is hugely welcome.
I also tried putting a Base in Reserve from being Active... and that reduced the size of my force, but not as much as manual control and not as exactly as I'd want it done. For example, why keep Poor or Fair quality squadrons around during excessive periods of peace and have to pay for it? I just Disbanded them like above so I see little value in this feature and didn't use it beyond that one time.
And now the ugly. 1.08 fails you as nothing is quick creating new squadrons. You still have to do it one squadron at a time or trust the Auto Add Aircraft which almost always gets it wrong. And then you're back at it micro-managing each squadron which takes forever.
Here are some ideas to speed up the process and some things to make it easier for us to use. The Right hand Panel has Tabs and the left hand panel needs them as well.
Below are the Tabs for the left Pane
Clicking on A-Z would give you what you have currently:
All (always on top)
Reserve (always on top)
Bases in alphabetical order
Clicking on Location would group all the bases by what zone they are located. So all bases in Northeast Asia would be listed before all the bases in Southeast Asia, etc.
Clicking on Type sorts the bases by type, CV, CVL, Naval Air Station, Airbase, etc., with each click alternating what group is at the top.
Clicking on Size would group bases by their maximum capacity from small to large and vice versa.
So now we need to be able to quickly make new squadrons. There's two ways to do this. The first way would be to have a Copy and Paste feature when right clicking on a Base in the left panel. You could copy the Squadron makeup from that base and then multi-select any same size or larger Airbases and Paste it. By default, any Base with existing Squadrons receiving a Paste function would have those squadrons moved to Reserve. This would quickly fill up all your empty bases with little effort.
The second way to do this is to add a feature for Reserve. By Right clicking on Reserve and selecting Add Air Unit, the Edit Aircraft Squadron box that opens would have an addition called Number of Squadrons, from say 1 to 20. It would then create the Role and Size and number of those squadrons you want added to Reserve. Once you populate Reserve with enough of each type of squadron and size you need, simply multi-select those squadrons from the list and drag and drop them into the bases you want.
I think the Copy and Paste feature would be a little faster, but I'm for whatever works easier for the Devs, because at this point, anything is better than creating squadrons by scratch which is a soul sucking chore that saps the fun right outta the game.
Cheers.
Oh, Edit: Besides the few bugs, like trying to increase the numbers in a squadron and it not letting you or getting out of bounds errors, all of which are mere annoyances, I'd like to be able to select a base by right clicking it on the left panel. Currently in 1.08 you need to left click it first. I see that as extra clicking nonsense.
