The separation of Britain and Ireland is not a happy subject. It is badly modeled in the game with serious detriment to Britain, especially in a war with actions in the Bristol Channel/Irish Sea/Eastern Atlantic as airpower, and hence capacity of and distance to bases, becomes significant.
Where this is not represented in the game:
Under the Anglo-Irish Treaty (1921):
1) Ulster (Base at Belfast) remained in the UK ,
2) The United Kingdom retained bases at, Berehaven, Queenstown (modern Cork /Cobh) and Lough Swilly, as naval and air bases. These were later sold to Ireland / Eire / The Free State under the 1938 British-Irish Agreement (aka British-Irish tripartite agreement on Trade, Finance and Defence). Much to the chagrin of the RN who had learned the hard way about trade warfare, airpower and submarines.
How could this be more efficiently modeled in RTW2?
How could this be more efficiently modeled in RTW2?
Obviously we could modify the in game political events, allowing the UK to retain bases at Belfast and Queenstown / Cork / Cobh, in the event of Irelnd /Eire / The Free Sate achieving independence, with perhpas a later event trihggering the loss of Queenstown / Cork / Cobh. However Berehaven and Lough Swilly are not represented in the game. One option would be to add them, but bear in mind the Q and A about Grenada, Easter Island and Bali, I am not going to suggest that. Instead:
a) Lough Swilly - Belfast makes a resonable substitute though farther east, we can live with that. Belfast remains British regardless of a second event.
b) Berehaven - as with Lough Swilly, and accept Queenstown / Cork / Cobh as a resonable fudge.
b) Berehaven - as with Lough Swilly, and accept Queenstown / Cork / Cobh as a resonable fudge.
Proposal
Assuming we are not going to create new base locations, would it be possible to modify the events and institute a new one such that:
- In the event Ireland / Eire / The Free State achieves indepencence Belfast should remain as a British base, and;
- Queenstown/ Cork /Cobh remains as British base, at least until a further event triggers a handover.
I think this would have a measurable ingame effect on actions in the South West of the Northern Europe map.
I hope that makes sense, and doesn't constitute me just making work for someone else.
