Messages appear from time to time telling me a ship needs an engine overhaul. Am I then meant to action this, or is it done automatically? If I am meant to do something, can someone tell me where I can find which ships need this after the messages are long gone? I can't find anywhere - several turns after the message has appeared and vanished - where I can locate an indication that a certain ship needs an overhaul. And since I made no manual note of the ship name when the message appeared, and my memory is terrible, I have no idea which ships need action.
Thanks!
Peter

I believe it's done automatically - if you look at ship status, it'll say 1 or 2 (meaning in maintenance for 1 or 2 months, just as in repairs after battle) instead of AF or RF or other status. Older ships are more prone to breakdowns and overhauls. I don't think it usually takes more than 1 or 2 months.

Thanks CCIP. So I don't have to worry about it.

From what I have seen you should consider overhauling any old ship (O).

or scrapping them!
Although I only quite rarely have serious problems because of obsolete engines. Even my old cruisers are usually capable of making their escapes. Usually it's the economics though that kill off old ships - "O" for me is usually a sign to check whether it's worth keeping that ship in service anymore.

Sometimes it is as ccip describes...a one or two month repair is specified for a given ship after the event notification of the need for an overhaul. Other times, you get the (O) annotation in the roster that specifies the need for an overhaul, which can be done as easily as updating the ship's design without change, or you can make other changes if your ship can accommodate them, such as revamping the machinery or changing guns per turret, or making other revisions tot he design. A design without change overhauls the engine as well.
