Per the screenshot provided: Does having the (O) after the ship year have any effect in the game engine, or is it just a reminder that your design is more than eight (I think) years old?

I think the cutoff is 10 years? Mainly its to let you know that, it also adds the 'Old' part to the name when you open up a ship card. In practice, I think it means more chances of breakdowns, etc., and occasional engine trouble in tactical. As someone else said, its a good indicator to assess if you should keep the ship around or not - if yes, then consider an overhaul or rebuild, if not, mothball or scrap it. The exception to this is things like minesweepers which I tend to keep around forever.

Guess I will need to start building new ones occasionally.
