So I got a convoy attack battle, with the mission assigned to sink at least two transports. My forces are four 500 ton destroyers, enemy forces are two destroyers and two 13k ton battleships in addition to the convoy. I take no damage, sink two transports, and almost sink a third. The game scored this as a major enemy victory and gave them 300+ more VPs than me. This seems strange to me, but I really have no idea how the game figures VPs so

In convoy missions the defender scores points for every merchants that manages to survive. So if you sunk 2 out of a 16 ship convoy, over 85% of the convoy made it to it's objective, which is a clearly desireable outcome for the enemy, despite your assigned objective being fulfilled at 2. The most recent patch (1.14) changed this objective to 6 sunken merchants, which I think is somewhere closer to the natural "draw" point in terms of points.
A bit of historical context, in Operation Pedastal the Allies sent 14 merchants under heavy guard to Malta. Only 5 managed to make it, but despite this it was an important victory for the Allies because the influx of supplies and fuel revitalized the ability for Malta to conduct operations.

You can see the breakdown of VP at the bottom of the battle report screen. You should have a line for your objective, with how many VPs you got for that, and “Ship Score” which represents damaged/sunk enemy ships. You can also see the breakdown for the enemy, including exactly how much they get for their surviving merchants.

Transports are quite valuable ships, think they're worth about 200vp each to the defender if they survive but worth almost nothing to the attacker if sunk.
Therefore, as said, hunt down every last one (when you can), it will prevent a defeat by the defender outscoring you.

The context for the TR victory points is really their cargo. With 100s or 1,000s tons of cargo per transport it can have strategic impacts get through such as:
- Huge quantities of food for a starving nation - Stockpiles of non-local metals to enrich armor plating - Regiments or more worth of tanks - Shipping crates of infantry rifles with more crates of ammunition

Thanks all, that makes sense. I'd have hunted down more of them but sinking two and almost sinking the third required my ships to basically empty the magazines. Stupid pathetic 500 ton destroyers
