San Diego should be out of range. OTOH, given the engagement geometry, the target may well pass out of range before the torpedo hits, and in the case where both the target and interfering ship are out of range, it may be that the game gives priority to the friendly ship in line of fire condition.

If you had opened the file you would have noticed said target is disabled and unable to maneuver. Additionally it has taken so much damage it can no longer move. Therefore, it cannot pass out of range before the torpedo hits.
