Is it just me, or are these way too common? It seems that every battle I have involving anything bigger than a protected cruiser results in a ship blowing up from a flash fire very early into said battle.

I believe there is actually an option in the "Preferences" menus to reduce (or eliminate I can't remember) ship explosions.

I don't get these all that often - in fact, I've only lost one of my own ships that I can remember recently. Doesn't feel excessive to me, especially when you consider the number of fatal or near-fatal turret fires that happened at Dogger Bank and Jutland, despite how indecisive those battles were.
But the option is there of course. My rule when playing SAI campaign was to enable reduced flash fires only after a few British ships blew up, presuming they'd have taken the hint.

Do not believe I have had any, but have inflicted a few on enemies. Maybe your foes had better she'll tech than your armor could withstand? Do not believe it is excessive, especially different games are so varying.

I've never had one - my French AI opponent had one. There is a box on Preferences you can check.

I've never had one - my French AI opponent had one. There is a box on Preferences you can check. I've only had a handful of these happen to me, but then I tend to give my turrets heavy armor at the expense of other parts of the ship. I've actually had more ships blow up from magazine explosions after torpedo hits, a la Pommern at Jutland.
It seems to happen more to the AI, especially those silly Brits with their floating firework barges.

Yeah, the only ones I've seen this happen to constantly is the British.
A few games ago they lost something like 10 BB/BC to them during a war in the 1920s that lasted for a few years. While I don't think the initial changes are wrong necessarily, it would be nice if there was a 'learning factor' whereby if they do loose many big ships this way, the chances get reduced after awhile due to corrective action.
