I play Italy and try to trigger a (second) war with france. I play vanilla without any mods.
I get the event to conquer Hainan in Southeast Asia. I say "yes" as this will surely put the line over red with France. I get Hainan and my war. One round later there is an uprising in Hainan. I send some ships do defend against France and to crush the rebells. The later is unsuccessfull and Hainan ..... does not declare independance but merger with Chin China.
"Plopp" on Hainan is suddenly the Chin China flag.
After that, France invaded Hainan.

If you're playing with Italy, Chin China was not even a player in your game.
Was the event to seize Hainan a 'coup' or a Blitzkrieg, and was Hainan Neutral or French?
I am guessing 'coup' and 'neutral', but I just want to be clear.

I saw a similar issue - playing as Germany, France occupied Hainan, which later rebelled, won, and declared independence as Chin China. I think I still have the save, note that I've got Dizzy's More AI BBs and the semi-official CV templates added.

Hainan was neutral. I got the event that you can take over a neutral region because of trouble there. This was before the war but triggered the war as France was embarassed. The next round in Hainan was an uprising. Then I forgot the development in detail. I sent ships to SEA but the uprising was very quickly successfull and I saw the Chin China flag on Hainan. In this round I sent my ships back to Europe as it was meaningless to fight in SEA. Annd immediately France invaded Hainan.
Maybe things are a bit confused because of the change in the round structure with the last patch, i. e. for the engine Hainan was still mine and only the messages popped up in a wrong order? Even then there is still the question how Chin China can pop up. The merger thing is nice but ... .
